A few of us are heading over to Italy by train next month to do the 24h of Finale. In order to take your bikes on most European trains they have to be bagged - the problem is that your average bike bag (I have a Neil Pryde one) isn't very portable, even without the bike in it.

We're wondering whether the best solution is to get a cheap thin bike bag (maybe giving it shape with some cardboard that can easily be ditched) like this:

http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=41796

Or I saw a link somewhere to a guide to making your own bike bag, but can't remember where, and don't know where to purchase the materials.

Any help would be much appreciated, because this is seriously denting my bubble of smugness from deciding not to fly! 🙂

That NZ Co (Ground Effect?) do one that requires a little dissassembly (sp) but then folds into an A4 sized lump.

ant, this is the homemade one. should be able to track down the fabric pretty easy. Nouveau was saying that Leon has two that he has made.

It's quite big but I can get my bike and all kit in this,DAKINE BIKE BAG has wheels and pop out handle, very sturdy, pricey but worth while, especially as your not flying weight shouldn't be an issue.

weight is an issue, as it's got to be carried on the bike afterwards.

Have a word with Leon - he had his ones at SSEC so maybe you can borrow those.

You don't want a Dakine one then!

Hey does it have to be a fabric one?

I flew spain and back on a x to y cycling trip using the clear plastic PVC bike bags from CTC website Cost a FIVER!!! nabbed some cardboard at either end o my journey and duct taped/ zip tied it on to the bike for protection.

Just remember to take some bigger zip ties for sealing the end off.

Packs down really small and can just chuck it.

Cool, cheers for the advice everyone. Paddy, that Cinelli one is actually in stock at Amazon, but apparently doesn't fold down very small.

I found the one Al's talking about but it's fairly 'spensive - looks nice though.

The CTC poly bag is cheap but looks like a bit of a one-use proposition.

Making your own sounds like the winner at the moment, but where can you buy Cordura or similar?

Ripstop Nylon we'd need about £6 worth per bag. even available in purple clubber.

Mackam,
If Mr Agreeable doesn't want your Ground Effect bag, I'd be keen to get my mitts on it(my email is in profile)
