Out with a group today and had a broken rear mech hanger, so took it off and went for a single speed solution, now when i've done this before the cassette has always forced the chain to the largest rear cog but today it decided to keep falling to the smallest cog, tried to put twigs in the cassette next to the cog i wanted to use but didn't stop it from falling off.

So why today did it decide not to step up to the largest cog?
and what's the best solution in the situation, the rear mech was written off so no good carrying a spare mech hanger or trying to straighten out the old one

cheers STW

Shorten the chain?

I'm a bit confused, if you shorten it to the right length it shouldn't jump....

i shortened it to about 1/2 a link too long for one cog and 1/2 a link too small for the next cog, found it difficult to get an exact length with a vertical drop out bike and no half links

I tried using a cassette cog to go ss and it didnt work because the teeth are ramped to aid shifting and the chain kept coming off

andy - sometimes you can't get a magic ration - try a different sprocket on the cassette?

trail and error - find a combination of chainrings, sprockets and chain length that gives a decent chainline and is the right tension. Its not always possible
