[#3033306]

so i am going to rebuild my avid caliper - i have the red rubber grease:)

i just ordered the pisons from chain reaction - although they were marked as the 5 & 7 ones, I am taking it that these are ok for 3s too (as nothing turned up in searches for those?

thats it really!

wish me luck

Are you just doing it for the hell of it? Reason I ask is because new brakesets are so cheap I'd say it isn't worth the time and effort!

I've been real pleased with my Juicy 3s, but then I would be having last had xt vees. But, changed pads for superstar sintered ones a few weeks ago and despite setting everything up properly and cleaned discs and pads to surgical standards, they now howl like a banshee, rear worse than front.
Do I service the calipers, bin the pads and put avid ones back in or change the brakes? Last week our group was caught up by a guy who'd lost the group he was riding with, he homed in on us from 2 miles away, following the sound of my brakes.

I use Nuke-Proof enduro pads in my Juicy 7s. Awesome stopping, no squeal.
My LBS JEJames has some Elixir 3s for 55 quid per bike end, why bother fiddling with Juicy 3 calipers? Just get some new brakes! I bought some Elixir 3s myself but I prefer My Juicys (lighter, stop better, look nicer (carbon levers, Ultimate lo-pro pad contact adjusters)) so they'll be on the 'bay later today!

cheers for the replies - i was only really after whether the 5/7 pistons would fit the 3s:)

i agree buying a new brake would be what £50? but I dont have that so a £10 investment in some pistons will have to do, although agree it is major faff!

will let you know how i get on and buy shimano next time!

Unless there is a real reason to buy new then fixing anything is a good thing, well done to the OP for not just chucking their brakes out. What's wrong with a bit of time & effort anyway?

Yes, the Juicy 5/7 kit from CRC should fit just fine. If I recall correctly the only difference is the O-ring seal for between the two caliper halves, so make sure you keep the old one cos the new one won't fit!

Good luck! Juicy 3s are a bit of a sod to keep working in my experience...

If it all goes Pete Tong then for 30 quid as a VIP member you can get a brand new caliper which obviously includes a set of pads.
