Go to the Surrey Hills? Not a trail centre, but some of the best singletrack in the UK. Bedgebury is pants (and I'm not a trail centre snob).

+1 Holmbury, Pitch etc.. or Swinley - more than an hour though.

If you don't know your way round, drop in on Nirvana Cycles and buy their trail map.

do you need to go to a trail centre to train for Afan and Brechfa?

Swinley?
Surrey Hills?
spend the two hours you'd waste there-and-back in the car as training time instead on the Downs around Brighton?

Agreed, you're not going to get the fun or the workout on the South Downs that you would in Surrey. The South Downs is beautiful and great for big days out, but the decent singletrack is short, geographically spread out, hard to find (and mostly illegal).

Plenty of decent riding (single track) around brighton, etc to match that on the north downs you just need to find it.

Well, bearing in mind that Im nodding in agreement with woodsman (waves) if you really dont want to ride around Brighton your best bet would be to go up to Peaslake and try Pitch, Holmbury or Leith Hill.

Or, you could try Whiteways above Arundel or Friston over towards Eastbourne for some singletrack (both are quite gloopy at the moment though)
