I've had an old foot pump for years, which has always done the trick quickly and efficiently, but its starting to die and I think I'm going to need a replacement fairly soon. I'm happy enough with another foot pump (with pressure gauge), but I've seen alot of people using track (stirrup) pumps. Is there any real advantage to the track pumps or is it just marketing / personal preference? Thanks.

Track pumps tent to have much more accurate gauges than a foot pump and better for reaching high pressures. This is more of an issue for road bikes but having an accurate gauge is still good for mtbing. Tack pumps are also nicer to use.

Asda do a Bell track pump for about £13. Mine is a few years old now, but has stood up well.
