Just dont understand the need not to put the empty wrapper in your pocket, what the rest of the course was like I cant imagine,
Filled my pockets til I couldnt pick up any more. 👿
I was not taking part just riding up to my local trails.
rant over.
I don't understand why so many people think it's ok to drop litter. It gets quite bad at Llandegla, although I noticed that it wasn't too bad today.
Strava/Sportive world champs innit.Marginal gains and all that bollocks.
Etape? Well, they're like proper pro racers, aren't they? Serious, hardcore racers, not just charity riders, oh no! Service Course will clean up after them, as they're all oh so awesome.
wouldn't want to ruin a 200 quid merino retro-race top by putting sticky wrappers in the pockets, would they? 🙄
I picked a few today on the road, people are muppets. I even see gel wrappers on the Bristol-Bath cycle path. Who the hell needs energy products on a sustrans path??
Its harder to understand when cyclists (or walkers etc.) litter as I imagine they go out to enjoy the outdoors, and then do their best to screw it up. I expect it from the general population.
It was experiencing this behavior, and (other bad behavior) on the dragon ride several ears ago that caused me to stop parting in mass cycling events. I'd always excepted certain amount of twitishness in any large group but this was unbelievable.
As iamconfusedagain stated these people must like being outdoors but are happy to litter. Must be the same people who walk to the top of a mountain and leave litter and take shit. Also the same type of people who hang dog shit in trees. Castration is the only option, to stop them passing on their arsehole genes.
I think the outdoors just happens to be where they do stuff that they feel good about after - measurable achievements to be 'shared' etc. If you appreciated the outdoors you wouldn't be throwing crap on the floor.I imagine they go out to enjoy the outdoors
I blame the golf it's who have turned to cycling and haven't the imagination to ride without a set if arrows at every turn.
They Should go back where they came from.
Make golf club membership cheaper is what I say.
People get defensive when accused of dropping gel wrappers so I now tell them about the benefits of using a gel flask, hopefully some take it on board.
You ever followed an mtb event and seen the number of abandoned inner tubes ? Dozens of the things dropped. / throw. To the side of the track as well as in the middle of the path
I rode as sweeper on a Salisbury Plains ride once - amazed at people doing that. It's not just etape riders
You ever followed an mtb [s]event[/s] trail and seen the number of abandoned inner tubes ?
It's not just racers, pretend racers, stravaists, kids or old people.
Who the hell needs energy products on a sustrans path??
STRAVA!!! etc...
We did the Ruthin MM yesterday and i thought the litter was better than previous, not good enough but better.
as the man said " cows don't like gels"
collect a bin bag's worth and either send it to the organisers telling them "this may be something to do with you"
or send them to Cycling Plus magazine, and get them to do an article on how filthy their litterbug readers are.
I always carefully place my used wrappers in my jersey pocket.
I am sometimes embarrassed to find that they aren't there when I get home.
🙁
It's not just cyclists. [s]racers, pretend racers, stravaists, kids or old people[/s] have you seen the amount of litter at the side of any road.
Be worth contacting one of the cycle mags and the organisers about it. The event could be stopped or the organisers include a sweeper next year if the local authority/site owner are made aware of the issue.
Law of averages means that one of these dirty scumbags frequent this forum.
Let's hear your reasoning.
Leave nothing but tyre prints. I never drop wrappers, even racing on a closed circuit. If i did by accident, I'd go back and collect it afterwards.
Dreadful behaviour.
From the Tour of Britain Race Manual
Green Zone!
The Friends Life Tour of Britain is lucky enough to race through some of the most scenic and protected areas of the British countryside each year, so organisers, riders and teams are requested to respect the environment throughout the race. Riders are kindly requested to only dispose of unwanted packaging, wrappers and bidons in the designated Green Zone, from which rubbish will be collected by the organisation each day. Outside of the feed zone riders are requested to keep litter in their pockets. The Green Zone will be located immediately before and after the Feed
Zone on each of Stages 1–7. The Green Zone will commence 500m before the
Feed and extend until 500m beyond the Feed, indicated by technical signage, with litter being collected by the organisation following the passage of the race.
I dont get it. you carry it with you before you use it so why not carry it home when empty?
Same as people that litter out of cars? WHY not wait.
Same reasons as this thread I blame the parents.
Teach your kids from an early age to respect their environment and it becomes second nature for them not to litter.
Oddest piece of cycling related litter I've seen is a chain. Who carries a spare chain?
Maybe they didn't carry a spare chain...and walked home?
With 2000 riders you'll always get a few who drop litter, either by accident or not. I did the etape yesterday and didn't see that much litter at all. Maybe 6/7 gel wrappers over the 85 miles.
I picked up 38 over a couple of miles of the Worlds End road, saw lots more but didn't have space in my pockets for any more and there was a section of Mc Donald and Kentucky wrappers which took the overall winner for mess, guessing that was not the Etape .
dunmail I snapped a chain on a pitch dark night, sprinting downhill on the way home. Went back to find it and couldn't! Freewheeled home, so it might have been mine, although it was only there for 1 day as I went back the next day after work in the daytime to pick it up....
Litter, in general, really winds me up - it's so unnecessary and pointless.
Who the hell needs energy products on a sustrans path??
