To re-colour frame,...

To re-colour frame, or not bother?

I did a bad thing, while i was waiting for IT to update my computer, i ended up ordering a Surly Krampus frameset.

Annoyingly, the awesome army Green and mustard Yellow options (my two favourite coloures) were £1049 (for a 4130 frame, are you mad?)

found a "first loser silver" frame and fork which hopefully is now in the post for a much more sensible £600

Question is, what are my options for recolouring it, is it worth it?

  • Get the whole thing re-powder-coated, while its a clean, bare frame?
  • Find some "frame protection" that adds a bit of character
  • Let the kids loose with some paint pens, and go for custom doodles (the worst bit is their attention span is poor, so would end up with some scribbles and a "wrecked" frame, most likely

Or just grow up and move on?

Any inspiration around?

PS: Im going to have an XL bootzipper up for sale shortly

Buy some rattle cans and let the kids express themselves.

This. I can't begin to understand why anyone would actively take steps to change how their bike looks.

This, but do it yourself.

There are UK suppliers, but their own website is better for ideas.

I’d powdercoat. There’s some really nice colours and finishes around.

I've had multiple frames powdercoated by a small and at the time local to me powdercoaters. Didn't cost much as I said just use whatever colour you've only got that's not enough for your main work.

Lasts well, and it's a nice surprise what colour you end up with. Unless they use silver, i guess!

Sounds like a you issue!

Same way people redecorate their houses, tend to their garden etc. Pretty simple to understand, surely?

Seems a shame to respray over a fresh new frame; might as well get some time on it whilst box fresh and then later down the line when it's looking a bit more worn and tied go down the respray route
