[Closed] Time ATAC XC12 - threaded locknut. Advice please...

My trusty XC12 pedals have been languishing in the parts bin for a while, as I’ve managed to strip the thread on the locknut that goes on the outer end of the pedal - but can’t bear to get rid of them. It’s the nut that basically holds everything together, so when the dust cap is removed and I stick a 10mm socket on it with an Allen key at the crank end, they just spin together.

Is there any way of removing it? I don’t think there’s room to start destroying it because it’s quite recessed, but wondered if there’s any tricks or tips please... There’s just a tiny bit of play in the pedal when the dust cap is nipped up and as the other pedal’s running like new (in spite of their mileage) - and that they cost a fortune, I’m keen to try to fix it...

cheers in advance.

I had a similar thing with my old MX6's. In the end I solved it by tapping the threaded end with a drift until the nut was up against the outboard bearing and the axle was as free as possible from the bushings/bearings then forcing the outboard bearing against the nut (which was held in a 10mm socket in a vice) while pulling back on the spindle and simultaneously unscrewing (this was easier using the spanner flats than a hex key as I could pull and turn at the same time). This seemed to engage whatever was left of the threads or nyloc enough to get it off. Replacement was just a standard M6 nyloc nut from what I remember.

Thanks @Shackleton - really helpful. I’ll give it a try!

Not really made much progress unfortunately. Had it in a vice, given it a bit of a thwack a few times and it’s definitely shifted the nut along the axle very slightly but I can’t seem to get it to engage at all to try to unthread it. I’ll keep trying...
