PREAP or something.

Anyone used one?

Worth bothering with or would using an old bar and a clamp achieve the same?

I have one. Feels like a gimmick but I use it all the time in the home gym. Gives me added motivation as you can directly correlate it to riding the bike.

The app is a gimmick so don't bother with that!

It's good for unstable plank as well as press ups

My lad watched a YouTube video and we use an old inner tube and gorilla tape to make it... works perfectly.

I thought that might be the case.... 😁

Cheers!

I just use an old bar and stem for planks and push ups.

Not tried the real deal so not sure how it compares but seems to do the job and I'm saving the planet by re-using spare parts 😜

These are up there with BOSU balls.... waste of time. Just do press ups or suchlike

I've got one on the way, obviously it's basically just a wobbly bar but I reckon the app stuff will keep my attention better- I'm not good at sustaining exercise stuff so we'll see if that helps.

They add instability so will be making push/press ups more difficult. See also push ups on very low hanging gymnastics rings - very very difficult.

I've just made one, it's an interesting concept and I'll definitely incorporate it into my home workouts.

They undeniably make the movement harder, but that doesn't necessarily make it better. You can exert less force on an unstable surface, which is the opposite of what you want if you're doing press ups to improve your pressing strength.

Ah ha you got me! I'm only repeating received wisdom, well, and some experience (ie I know 1st hand how much more difficult push ups are on gymnastic rings) But I don't understand how an unstable surface is going to lessen the amount of force required to do a push up? Still the same force required, plus it's going to activate additional muscles to counter the instability. I don't know, but that's what I've taken from all the exercise videos on youtube I've watched.

Presumably you're not just aiming to improve your pressing strength though. The idea is that you're forced to stabilise and work your core at the same time? Otherwise you might as well just bench press. Anyway, save the hassle and do one-arm press-ups is my advice 😉

But I don’t understand how an unstable surface is going to lessen the amount of force required to do a push up?

There's a good summary of the research on unstable surface training here:

https://journals.lww.com/nsca-scj/fulltext/2010/06000/is_unstable_surface_training_advisable_for_healthy.7.aspx

I have no expertise in the area, but have learnt enough to discount the vast majority of exercise video on Youtube. That said if your goal is to be more active and exercise more, rather than train towards something, and the novelty of the handle bar push up things motivates you then knock yourself out. Not literally, careful now, that looks unstable... 🙂
