I'm most definitely not quiet. That day on Nan Bield I was quiet due to the thought of hardgraft ahead 😆

My first words to ton when I met him were 'jeesus your a big lad' 😯

It's not the (very rare and probably not serious) threats of violence, or the stupid arguments that turn personal (between the usual suspects who can't let it lie) that bother me - I just stop reading those threads.

But the scorn dished out to some questions or opinions by certain contributors doesn't do the forum any favours, in my opinion.

Why do some people feel the need to pounce on anything they think is naive or misinformed like it's a personal victory for them?

I put it down to usually something not going there way at work / personal life / on World of Warcraft.

I'm sure I've done that at some point (particularly when someone trots out the magazine rubbish of material sciences - steel is springy, alu dead, etc). Probably just grumpy at the time but usually I try to do it in a more constructive way. Bike industry BS really does get my goat though.

Actually just remembered a new one that I really 'liked' - layback posts are more comfortable 🙂

What's needed is some perspective.

The internet is used mainly by IT bods. These are traditionally quite geeky, picky types that aren't known for their atheleticism or physical assertiveness - they will "beat" someone by out-nerding them. Now the internet is perfect for this - verbally beat someone without the need for real conflict.

Therefore these rather geeky people can get away with appearing to be crazy or controversial without having to turn up in person - perfect.

The worst ones never post pics of themselves up, jump on every thread and try to win every argument by using pedantry and insults on a grand scale. Meet them in person (done so a few times mostly off surf forums) and they are pussycats with a sheepish and apologetic smile.

After blowing my top many times over such excruciatingly annoying people I now know the truth - the more insulting and patronising someone is, the more of a keyboard warrior they are.

Nature of a forum.

Organic and unpredictable.

Nothing more amusing than people offering each other up to fight over an inane comment.

Like a fat trout jumping for a fat mayfly, they simply cannot resist leaping for that tasty morsel .. 😆

Let's take Jamie as our first example - in IT, been part of the STW "fat clubbers" for ages, loves to jump in on most threads with an "amusing" one sentence put down.

I'm a recent convert to STW - I was originally a bit put off by just 3 main forum categories, but I now see that it works and really like the forum.

TBH, I find the general tone of the threads pretty good and supportive here, apart from one or two notable recent exceptions. Like quite a few, I just stop reading. I also like the less intrusive moderation on STW ... on some other forums (not necessarily cycling-related), the mods intervene super-quick, and I've seen some fairly sarcy comments made by them on threads they've closed, precluding the OP from any sort of right to a reply. Only happened to me once (and I still don't know what the mod's reason was, as it was a technical question and in no way controversial), but was enough to make me lose interest in the forum, having seen it happen to a fair few other people too.

I like STW and I think this sort of thread is healthy too, a bit of soul-searching never did anyone any harm 8)

I'm flattered you take such a keen interest, but not really on the money.

It has been a dream of mine to work in IT tho.....one day....one day.

>Do you remember when the internet started? Everyone was nice to each other

And I think that's partly the problem.
Now every man and his dog has internet access, the usually niceties/netiquette you'd see on forums years ago - or here in the earlier days - has gone by the board. People seem to think they can behave exactly as they would with their mates (I'm guessing), and poor behaviour gets perpetuated with the attitude of 'that's how it is on here so it must be ok' - judging by some of the earlier posts at any rate.

(That's not to say there weren't issues/flames on forums in earlier years, but that'd be more likely as a result of posting without searching the forum/reading stickies/faqs and generally acting like a noob)

I've pretty much got to the point of not bothering to visit/post - not even so much posters being rude as just ill-mannered, IMO.

I suppose it's easy to say bad or inflamatory things when there are almost no consequences.

Maybe it boils down to how people honestly see other people. If there are no consequences then why hold back? In real life you're likely to get a punch on the beak or worse. But on the internet, you can just ignore any responses and come away thinking you've won.

It's human nature I suppose. I've met enough people via the internet in real life to appreciate that theres a real person behind every post, so try and stay polite.

blimey, that was a load of right-on, back slapping, my idea of the internet is better than your idea of the internet.

Here's a picture of a dog dressed as Yoda.

Right.

The only time I get really really annoyed is when I try and contribute something valid and someone tells me I'm an idiot and I've been easily led by some nonsense. That really winds me up, since my personal life is largely taken up by an impassioned search for knowledge, truth and understanding...

So that's basically TJ. I think he's a decent enough bloke, but he just refuses point blank to accept anything I say if I disagree with him, because he seems to think I'm genuinely stupid.

And when I point out that he is just not quite as well informed as some other people, he goes quiet and then comes back a few months later to do the same damn thing.

Do say:

"Well that's an interesting idea, that's not how I understood it - perhaps you could clarify and maybe we can both learn something"

Don't say:

"You're an imbecile!"

I did threaten to punch him, but I was in no way ever going to do this clearly. And he knew it too. It was just catharsis 🙂

I like very much the dog dressed as Yoda. It's as if it knows it looks stupid, and is internalising the whole degrading episode.

It makes me laugh.

So you started all the beef! You fiend

What a beautiful time when it was all "wow you're on the other side of the world!!!" "yeah I can't beleive this internet thing it's amazing!"

Novelty only satisfies for so long. Now I'm so jaded I don't even care about insulting some tool in korea, who I'll never meet, over the finer details of a phone I may never even buy. What's.... happened to me ma?! 😳

LOL at the crab poster.
I like the way people think that this forum is bad, it's not, it's really quite civilised. You should have been on Usenet in its heyday. There were court battles that affect the way that all of us use the internet now and there was also a Usenet murder. Unfortunately the geeky nature of the media and the cost to ISPs have all but killed it. Shame, because it was far faster, more user friendly and reliable than web forums. The unmoderated language would have had a few here running off to mum though.

The internet is used mainly by IT bods. These are traditionally quite geeky, picky types that aren't known for their atheleticism or physical assertiveness

This delicate little IT bod shall have to get rid of all his rugby and skiing trophies to fit in then! 🙂

Thing is Molgrips - everything you say there about me equally applies to you from my point of view

,......... but he just refuses point blank to accept anything I say if I disagree with him, because he seems to think I'm genuinely stupid.

And when I point out that he is just not quite as well informed as some other people, he goes quiet........

However - you rarely get personally offensive as some do on here despite what I admit was provocation from me. I am sure I am right but I could have been more diplomatic.

I'll not debate diet with you anymore as it is simply pointless.
