I’ve been a member for years, well before The Great Hack, and was a paid up member for the last few years. Decided not to renew my membership this month due to all of the above plus for some reason the Alpkit thread closure and subsequent reopening annoyed me. It seemed like the contributions on the existing thread were totally discounted/negated by the powers that be.
Sorry about the Ads issues folks, it is being investigated

Yeah, that was an error not malice.
A major effort required today to be able to click on this "The New Forum". Had to try and disable neighbouring ad to be able to do so. What a nonsense.
I know it wasn’t malice, but it’s an error that’s happened several times over the last few months…
I really want to support STW but I shouldn’t have to pay to be a beta tester.
The audience who are interested in bike packing in outer mongolia is far larger more affluent and attractive to advertisers.
FIFY
It's hard to say what made DIRT so awesome, because lets face it, it was equally awful as it was awesome at times! The random font colour choices, the layouts that left you searching for the next column on the page, the to be continued next months that just never happened.
I think it just felt like Steve Jones had always just got in from a ride (or interviewing someone, maybe in a pub) and typed everything whilst still full of adrenaline.
You read every article, and even in winter you'd be itching to get out the door halfway though.
Some threads take an age to open and reply to. Ukraine is one, but that's understable with four years of content, Syria is another, but is only four pages.
Others are much quicker
Why is it taking 60 seconds plus to open any thread? (android Chrome). Is this normal? Feels like I am back on dial up....
It's 100% the ads
Sorry. By 100% I meant out of interest I tested with and without on windows pc laptop, chromebook, android tablet & phone and can now verify the difference in page loading and posting speed is night and day. It's litterally an unusable site with. Honestly can't see why a new visitor would even come back.
They're clearly never going to do anything about it. Probably too late anyway.
skin on or off rice pudding?
@mark you might want to take a look at the classifieds........happens when i click on an ad in the RH column and then click on the classified tree about the advertisers name. It's OK when i click on the classifieds link top of the page
Finally. Something in the classifieds that isn't massively overpriced!
Load times are getting worse again, for me. Back up to 30s to load a thread.
I guess it is not intentional that the moderators have no membership status, sort of makes them identifiable
The pop up for the subs deal obscures the fields for username and password when you’re trying to log in on an iPhone
AM NEW HERE
We are back with the missing posts. 58 posts on the native thread, only 54 visible to me
We are back with the missing posts. 58 posts on the native thread, only 54 visible to me
Is that "missing" or is the post count including items that have been deleted?
missing. new posts had been made but werenot visible. they appeared after an hour
I'm sure someone has mentioned it but, if not : clicking on a thread to go to the first unread post invokes two page loads (and hence increased load time) - the first page of the thread and then the page you need. In contrast, clicking the "end of thread" link takes you straight to the required page in one go..
My subs have lapsed (when did it change from just being a Direct Debit?) and now I understand why all the moaning about the ads. It's a bit like the old Ling site.
Must sort out to pay that or I'm not going to last long.
Now when I go to the bottom of many threads there is a band of advertising and grey band with Contact Us, FAQ etc cutting across the contents of the last post.

Same here, it means a couple of posts are blocked.
and here - Chrome on a chromebook, doesn't seem to be same on android phone.
This is 1.01 level basic shitness, I'm so near done with this place despite being an active subscriber since issue 2 up until it went crap last year.
There's a certain level of irony here
Did make me smile though I have some sympathy for the (freeloading 😀 ) poster
I don't have any of these issues despite being a "freeloader" is it because i'm running nord vpn ?

I'm not convinced it's much better when logged in as a subscriber reading this thread.
Surely it's getting painful financially - there's a lot of regulars seeming not currently subscribed and interaction seems hugely down on a year ago.
"Have you missed"
No, but I'm missing being able to see the reply box.

Just to say this is not only affecting thisisnotaspoon - although weirdly wasn't happening in this thread. (The wording is actually "You may have missed" and then a set of four articles).
You can bodge around it by shrinking the window to be the size of a phone - but its not exactly enouraging.
Anyone else getting bottom menu bar and line of adverts overlaying 3/4 of the way down the page, not staying at the bottom of the page?

I can see the reply box, but not the "Add Reply" button. You can't just hit return/enter because the button isn't " in-focus"
I have to type the reply, shrink the box to a slit with the triangle-thing and then I can see "Add Reply" to press it
It’s no better as a subscriber which is why I am not anymore. It was a poor decision to migrate the website IMO as it’s significantly worse. Someone should have made the decision to pull the plug on the project when it was discovered that the appalling performance of the old website, which partly prompted the move as I understood it, was down to a rogue plugin. Or archive this one and start up a new one entirely, one that works like 100000s of others …
Is this thread monitored by STW or is it just a talkshop among ourselves?
So slow to post that I find myself writing a reply, hitting “add reply”……waiting……waiting some more…….head to kitchen to make myself an espresso…….return and sit down with espresso and finally it’s posted so I hit forum page………waiting…….waiting……..take empty espresso cup back to kitchen and wash up. And start the process all over again but 9 times out of 10 i just don’t bother and head elsewhere online as I just can’t be ****ed anymore

Presumably they don’t have the resources to change anything now even if they wanted to.
Been sent an email offering to re subscribe at 50% off. Torn as I want to support, but even as a subscriber it wasn’t a great experience.
As above, is anyone listening..?

And yet I'm not experiencing that at all.
Edit: 7 seconds to post that reply. Not instant, not enough time to leave the room.
😂😂😂😂😂

Is that the "In case you missed it..." bar that floats around and obscures the bottom of threads so you can neither read the end of them or reply? What a POS...
Yep. This one. On EVERY page, on phone or laptop Chrome.

That seems to be the sum of things. 🙁
My subscription lapsed due to an old credit card being on my account details so I've been on the free member level for a few days now - wow!! Is it a bad user experience, slow, banners across the screen so posts are unreadable and replying a chore. I can't see how with such a poor user experience the forum can be tenable
Presumably they don’t have the resources to change anything now even if they wanted to.
Didn't they just have a fairly chunky investment in the business?
Most of the advert and layout problems can be fixed at the user end, but you shouldn't have to.
IME the forum is currently unusable for posting, see https://singletrackworld.com/forum/off-topic/assisted-dying-debate/paged/3/#post-13705663
I've had to repeat paste a paragraph to get the post to where I can continue the reply because of the "In case you missed it" banner (also mentioned by other users ^^ but not officially acknowledged)
Needless to say I've lost track, so I posted the reply with the intention of an edit and now the reply hasn't appeared for me to edit and "Save"
Already reported to tech@ by email
Now out of time to edit. I get that I'm a freeloader and always have been, but that isn't a reason to chase other potential customers away
I think it's all a bit sad. Clearly the forum (and the magazine) are in a 'managed decline'. I doubt either will be around in a years time. I really hope they are, but based on the current situation, I don't see any future for either.
I'm a fully paid up member logged in. There is no reply box any more on the 3rd page of the assisted dying thread. The forum is just a buggy mess and unfortunatly its killing the forum

The banner obscuring most of the forum declaring "print ain't dead" whilst killing off the ability to use the forum... Marketing genius?

I can confirm that action does get taken, but sometimes it takes a few days. My email from a couple of days ago is sorted (see post yesterday ^^ and other earlier posts)
Thanks

that one - it reappeared again 🙂 I have made further answers
Is it beyond the realms of technology to get external links to resize properly?
Helpful as ever
He's now wrong though, is he. That's not a site fault, that's pasting the wrong link and being blocked by the photo host.
Anyway, the reason I'm here is I've just noticed something.
Performance on thread loading appears to be proportional to the size of the thread. A new thread loads near-instantaneously where as (say) the Trump thread takes ages. I am not a DBA but this is, I presume, an SQL issue? I'm guessing that the query is requesting the entire thread and then displaying what's needed rather than only hitting the database for the data actually required. This would explain why it initially displays page 1 before hopefully jumping to page [whatever].
Is anyone else seeing similar and can confirm or am I hallucinating?
Yes, I noticed this on the Trump thread. I haven't looked at other large threads, so can't confirm it's just based on the size. Seems particularly slow on a phone.
Yeah, I'm seeing similar...
Helpful as ever
Not being able to see an image for reporting about an appearance is better with images that work.

A little slower on huge threads, yes. I’ll mention it.
UK imgur access ... removed UK gov rules.
Yes, seen that and imgbb.com allowing embedded. Not sure what other hosts are out there now.

Sorry, only just spotted this comment but I mentioned it weeks ago, I can't be bothered to trawl back and find out exactly when. Speed differs a bit depending on where you click. Hitting the >> icon takes you to the final post on the last page and is fairly speedy. Clicking on the thread title find the first post you've not read, which takes ages, particularly as pointed out on the long running threads, trump and Ukraine can take 20 seconds or more.

imgbb works fine for me? On desktop, paste image, select 'copy' next to the .png address it spits out, paste address into STW.
Or does it just look fine for me because I'm logged into it and is failing by stealth for other viewers? That's nasty if so.

Don't think its that. Its just taken 10/15 seconds to reply to a new thread and probably a good 30 seconds (no joke!) from hitting the quote function on your post above to it actually appearing here for me to reply to.
Assume this new host the site has just been migrated to is an Amstrad CPC64?

Or the server is still busy churning away, it is being monitored by tech.
