Terrible sleep after hard workouts, any tips?

What time are you getting up in the morning if you're going to bed at 830 at night?

Usually awake from about 5am, downstairs with a coffee to say hello to the cats for about 6am (my favourite time of day before the rest of the family gets up 😂).

I don't typically do hard workouts in the morning, apart from just not feeling like it I don't like how I feel for the rest of the working day! Probably no worse than I do after a night of little sleep though...

I think lunchtime workouts are the way forward, I can probably get away with one longer lunch a week.

Have had a couple of sleep seminars at work from someone who works with athletes on their sleep. They didn't talk about supplements at all, the main thing they really tried to hammer home was the importance of a routine i.e. go to sleep and get up the same time +-1 hour every day. Obviously that's kind of hard to achieve in the real world. I personally train about 7-9pm and find it hard to shut down after that. They said not to try and force it and instead just do something calm, whatever it takes to relax and eventually feel sleepy.

getting up at the same time, to go to work, made literally no difference to me.

interesting. I’m the opposite (though I don’t know what you’re classifying as a hard workout, or if that’s what I actually do). I’m not great pre breakfast and coffee but after that is by far the most effective time for me to exercise. Wakes my body up properly. If I put it off until later I find an excuse - too hungry/just eaten/get into a task I want to finish and run out of time.

Keep it cheap and simple.

Pint of milk immediately after and stretch.

I suffered with restless leg for years until a physio got me onto doing back extension exercises. Apparently it's pretty common for people who sit a lot at work to have a nerve impingement in the lower back that means things don't stretch like they should below the waist. Sorted the restless leg within a week. The physio now travels all over Australia working in rest homes to solve restless leg for people so they can sleep.

I've read the same study (or a similar one) and while it's true, nonsteroidal anti inflammatories decrease inflammation, and to an extent it's that inflammation that helps your body recover so they hinder that.  I've seen others that put the difference between getting 7 hours sleep and 8+ hours at close to 50% more gains.  If it gets you 2 hours more sleep, it's probably worth it. 

I meant to say I found this perspective really interesting, and just yesterday was randomly flicking through YouTube and watched a Roadman video on weight loss for cyclists and he pointed out the connection between poor sleep and cravings/ snacking the next day. Definitely something to work on!

Pre-breakfast/ post coffee is my favourite time for relatively gentle Z2 type exercise, either cycling or running. Hard workouts (sweetspot and above basically) leave me fidgety and restless during the day, not ideal for a job that involves sitting, reading and writing all day 🙄

Current plan is to maybe save the hard workouts for a Friday when I can finish at 4pm. This might also prevent some of the self-destructive snacking and drinking I usually indulge in on a Friday! 😂

I used to take a paracetamol before bed if I had been racing. Seemed to work well, although an ibuprofen as suggests above makes more sense now I think about it.

Just a thought, you're not taking any caffeine laden energy gels whilst you train?

No, am very good in that respect, rarely touch caffeine after 11am.

Which is another good argument for s lunchtime workout, arguably I should still be somewhat caffeinated 😎
