what is the black like - is it full on d/h or is it more technical xc - what type of bike?

what is the dh like? what type of bike - dh or 5" xc machine? (i know some will say hardtail but what would be most comfortable/fast?)

The DH is a private operation and you need to pay for a day pass. It's a proper DH course and you need a proper DH bike.

The red route isn't worth doing, unless you really, really like fireroads.

The black is a good starting point for riding in the forest. If you follow it, ignore the left turn by the huts on the DH course and go right up the hill to the DH car park. At the back of the car park, by the 4X start ramp, you'll find the entrance to Section 13, which is part of the new trails being built there - at the bottom of this, turn right and you'll rejoin the black route.

There's more good stuff off the waymarked trails. Second Sunday each month there's a guided group ride. Or, join the HTB forum at http://www.hamsterley-trailblazers.co.uk/forum/index.php and someone will probably meet you to show you around.

Where are you based?

As Mike says the reds not worth doing really but the new red section from the start of the 4x run is superb. Its about time we had a section like that in the North,I was surprised how dry it was today,a lot of it is quite rooty and its well worn in places, with some big holes in the trails to catch out the unwary.

I did the black and the blue today(20mile) with a couple of extra rides down some of the local singletrack to spice things up,its really good for all interests, the fast blue run is well suited to a hardtail, but I would say a well set up 5ins bike would do nicley on the black.

Theres no real fast technical riding on the official routes, and its more xc than downhill but an enjoyable day all the same, great cafe at the end too. ๐Ÿ˜‰

mike/gav
thanks for your replies
sounds like there is something for all of us there

is the new bit of red open yet and if not when is it due to open?
if it isn't officially open i guess from your posts that it can still be ridden, is it waymarked?

thanks

The new red bit officially opens in a couple of weeks, but it's ridable now. If there are people working on it, there will be signs up, so don't go down then. It's just one bit of trail, so you can't go wrong.
