Will a new 2 x 10 crank set ( truvativ x7 ) accept older rings from a 9 speed set up? Also is there any change in the bolt pattern? - I'm looking to use an older gamut P30 guard.

No. Might not be the best answer, but it's the only correct one I'm afraid. Different bolt pattern. Options as yet fairly limited and costly.

Can 10 speed chainsets be ran with an otherwise 9 speed drivetrain?
2x10spd SRAM appears to use an 80/120 bcd.
2x10spd Shimano appears to use a standard 64/104 bcd.
