It appears that the UK E-Bike industry isn't at all happy that the Government are scrapping import tariffs on Chinese e-bikes (although at the same time keeping tariffs in place on folding e-bikes to protect the UK market 🤷‍♂️). Apparently this is a post-brexit thing.

I'm guessing that an already overstocked market is going to get even more overstocked.

I'm also aware that Brompton have been quite vocal about the potential damage to themselves and UK manufacturers in general should similar tariffs be scrapped for ordinary bicycles. I'm not sure if a decision has been made on this yet.

Good hopefully it means prices will get re adjusted to the levels they should be rather than the stupid high prices that ebikes currently are.

There's a UK e-bike industry? Apart from Brompton who aren't affected.

I guess it'll make it more difficult identify the illegal or poorly made fire risk ones too because less inspection needed.

From the article Volt have a factory in Milton Keynes.  Volt are alright - I used to work in a shop that sold them and the quality was pretty good, we had very few issues.  They are all folding/commuter type bikes not E-MTB's though so not particularly well known here.

Id rather see the Chinese e bikes scrapped over them scrapping the tariffs.

It would be less of a pain if they were going to make sure the ones that arrive are legal for road use. But of course they won’t

Good. Why do our manufacturers need protecting can they not compete without it?

Brompton are very vocal about tariffs not being dropped for standard Chinese bikes whilst selling a lot of their bikes in China.

I'm not sure where we are with non-electric bikes & tariffs but I wonder if tariffs remaining on folding e-bikes might be a nod to Brompton & carry over.

Been talked about plenty times before - they can't compete on price...they beat quality (in a lot of cases), but can never beat the low prices...

I can't see an influx of Chinese tat having much of an impact in the pricing structure of eMTBs.

Losing the tarrifs might mean even more kids end up with unreliable no name Chinese eBSOs that do not meet the UK 25Kph motor assistance limit while working.

I doubt I'm alone in here, in that I wouldn't touch "Chinese ebike tat" with a barge pole.
