Do the On One old Whippet and/or C456 take tapered forks? Thinking about getting a 26" frame for an old parts build. Thanks.

The c456 does (not sure about the whippet). However, because the headtube is so short, the length of the taper on some forks causes problems with the top headset bearing not sitting in the headset because it bottoms out on the fork taper.

Nothing that can't be fixed- I use an external lower hope headset cup to effectively add a few mm to the headtube, I think you can get crown races that have a spacer built in underneath too.

I have an old RS revelation tapered in mine.

Also... still the most fun bike I've ever had! Don't think I'll ever sell it

I think it's just the short frames that had that issue with the C456?

I've got tapered Pikes on my large C456 with CK headset & previously had Revs with On one smoothy headset.

I think it only was a problem on the small frame.

Mines a medium and had the problem. Depends on the fork though, there is no standard that specifies how short/long the taper needs to be, so it may affect some forks and not others

My C456 frame was donated to me by a friend. Not sure what size it is, but just to say, if you’re thinking of getting one, you won’t regret it.

Perhaps not exclusive but it was deffo a problem on the small frame c456.

Reminds me I need a new headset; can anyone remember what top and bottom I need?

Thanks chaps. Missed the Whippet frame - the headtube certainly didn't look tapered.

C456 sounds like an option - but do you think Reba 120s would be too small?

I'm basing the whole exercise on having these tapered Reba's, wheels (26 too) and most of a drivetrain. Goal is a backup MTB for me & a decent MTB for my ever growing sons.

I think you’d get away with it but the frame was built for 140/50/60 travel.

The 456 referred I thought to inches of travel rather than 140mm - 150mm - 160mm. Anyway mine was really nice with 100mm forks and an angleset.

It was called 456 for a reason...4" to 6" travel so 120mm will be fine

Must dig my frame out the loft and sell it

I think 120mm would be OK. Mine was on 140mm Revs, I'm pretty sure I had the u-turn at the time and I'm also pretty sure I barely used it. I did end up putting an angleset in it (then got rid of it after the clearcoat started falling off and they ratted out of the warranty) and it was an absolute beast- not quite as good as my Ragley Ti that replaced it, but then almost nothing is.

You'll not regret it I think. Especially if it's the slightly later model with the solid colours instead of the naked carbon, the yellow was glorious.

The Carbon Evo was designed to take an outer headset cup on the bottom. The headset required is a ZS44 EC49 which hope do.

If I remember when I got my Hope one;
Top - Type 2
Bottom - Type F

Can't find much on the Carbon 456. Web archive just says - Mix Tapered Headset = 44mm Upper shell, 49.6 Lower shell
