i'm looking for a set of forks for my 06 rm slayer. I have 36 talas's at the moment but they're proving to be less than reliable, so now considering what can take it's place.

I've seen a set of dt swiss exc 150 rtlc for about £350 which seems like a great deal, but i don't know too much about them in terms of performance or reliability. Can't seem to find any info on the rtlc model via google. Anyone got any experience?

Get some Rock Shox? Pikes or something? Pace stuff (which the DT ones are derived from) was never very reliable

Wow, bit of a pattern emerging here. Just found a journo review on MTBR.com and he seemed to rate them reasonable highly, but he only had them for 6 months. What probs did you guys have with them?

It seems that there maybe aren't any reliable forks in the 150mm bracket that have adjustable travel. So far I've had a MZ All Mountain 1, which was awful, a (2nd hand) TALAS 36 which was great to start with but is now nowhere near as smooth and plush even after a service. The only alternative I can think of is RS Lyriks, but I've read all sorts of horror stories about them too, especially the 2-step versions...

Anything else I should be thinking of? I'd like a set of 36 Floats but I find I really need the travel adjust when riding up steep climbs...

I had a set of Pace RC40s for a year. The damping was great, but the travel adjust gave me major headaches.

DT Swiss make exactly the same forks (with an air spring instead of a coil) with a 90% markup on their original Pace RRP. That makes them hugely expensive and potentially very unreliable.

You're better served doing what I did and buying a set of Pikes.

I run a pair of Magura Wotans on my El Guapo and think they're great! Travel adjustable from 160mm-120(?)mm although the bar mounted lever is a bit flimsy. They've been reliable and have a nice, plush feel-i'd definately buy another pair!

Run rc41 20mm thru-axles for three years almost, and they're the best forks I've ever used, 100% reliable, and the action I prefer to 2009 fox, rockshox and magura (not ridden anything newer but rode the others extensively). The only two things that would prevent me buying them again, is the fact they no longer say Pace on them, and the aforementioned amazingly high price increase. If Pace still made the Rc41 with 20mm option, I'd buy another tomorrow.

Oh man this is driving me mad - I like the idea of the DT Swiss's, and the price is good - sub £400. I'd consider the Wotans, but my they're heavy. 36 TALAS and Lyrik 2 step both seem unreliable - so the question is are the DT Swiss less reliable than those. And I think a 140mm fork will just make the head angle that wee bit too steep for the descents. Oh what to do...?

The people that have had probs with the DT Swiss's - can you elaborate on what the problem was and how good the warranty backup was?

I would expect things have changed but the fork legs detached from the drop outs on mine on fast descent I lost my front wheel and had a very serious off.
I've just heard too many horror stories..

Fox Floats. Freeborn for around £530.

More reliable than Talas, much stiffer than DT Swiss.

Sorry, but although I'm majorly impressed with the damping of the Pace forks I had, it would have to be a serious bargain before I'd even consider it.

I agree that a set of Pikes will steepen the head angle of a Slayer, but I really think that you'd be better served elsewhere.

OK Thanks all - think I'll resist the temptation. The drop-outs-coming-off-mid-ride story was enough to make sure my wallet stays closed.

Will think some more on it - and probably end up back with Fox...
