Just went to see Scroobius Pip, love the wit and content but mostly growing up on US stuff, don't really know where to start with UK stuff of a similar ilk.

Recommend me some good honest UK rhymes please... 🙂

I think that rather than hip hop you need to have a look at grime as well so....not many in the style of Pip but

Roots manuva....legendary
DEL.......great album
Speech de belle
Ghost poet
Ed sheeren collaboration no. 5....interesting
From Canada sweatshop union and as a solo artist....kypros

Never heard anything like Scroobius Pip, on the UK hiphop front Fliptrix, Lowkey, Braintax & Jehst spring to mind.

If that's a little bit much for you, then start some Herbaliser, comes from the more jazzy end of the spectrum...

The Nextmen did some great stuff, though a lot was with US rappers.

This is ace but I can't post videos properly in my phone for some reason.

If you liked Pip, have you also heard the Dan Let Sac v Scroobius Pip stuff?

Not UK but related to Pip, check out B. Dolan and Sage Francis.

Akala (who's the brother of Ms. Dynamite - remember her?)

Probably the most intelligent/articulate hip-hop artist in the UK.

Foreign Beggars (their older stuff anyway)

Track down a copy of Rob Life's "Bangers & Mash" mix CD. It's got a great mix of new tracks then delves back into the older stuff like Hardnoise, Hijack, Demon Boyz, London Posse, etc.

I know it's not hip-hop, but Harry Shotta is the new breed of MC Eksman / Skibadee / MC DET

Hearing them live in a studio environment is 100x better than in a club.

Not so familiar with modern stuff but going back a bit, on my list of awesome uk Hip Hop tracks are:

Roots Manuva -Witness
Gunshot - Crime Story
Silver Bullet - 20 seconds to comply
Hardnoise - Untitled
Point blank - Planting Semtex
Blade - Mind of an ordinary citizen
WBI Red Ninja - Bad Horsemen
Killa Instinct - un-united kingdom

I could go on all night, in fact listing those has made me wanna go and dig out all my old vinyl and play it loud!

Phi-Life Cypher

Karl Hinds

Ummm....if you don't mind offending everyone around you, then Iron Bridge had some totally awesome tunes. And MC Pitman's first album is a total classic.

nice to see my good buddy getting love on here. He's the great grandad of uk rap and paved the way for scores of rappers.

Surprised theres been no mention (sorry if some HAS mentioned) of phi life cypher.

Also, pioneers in many ways. Stereo mc's.

Gunshot, hardnoise and hijack were great (i once turned hardnoise away from there own gig........ Oops). Ruthless rap assassins, demon boys and mc buzz b are well worth checking out.

Headcase lads are awesome. As is/was mc pitman.

Stig and respek ba rock the freestyle world.

I've never been into grime, but, the uk carved itself a great little scene!

I did! me me me!

Speaking of (really) old school, I still love the intro to Derek B's Bullet From A Gun, and making a Phil Collins beat sound good....

I remember seeing Mark B and Blade in Sheffield years ago, and was surprised when one of them came over to me after the gig to give me props for smiling, when everyone else was trying to look gangsta ha ha.

Also Dogz and Sledz was what Million Dan from the demon boyz released in 2006

DJ format's albums are always worth a listen. Canadian rapper on this one, Abdominal who's wicked, but uk DJ.
