Just went to see Scroobius Pip, love the wit and content but mostly growing up on US stuff, don't really know where to start with UK stuff of a similar ilk.
Recommend me some good honest UK rhymes please... 🙂
I think that rather than hip hop you need to have a look at grime as well so....not many in the style of Pip but
Roots manuva....legendary
DEL.......great album
Speech de belle
Ghost poet
Ed sheeren collaboration no. 5....interesting
From Canada sweatshop union and as a solo artist....kypros
Ghostpoet. Good on record, super awesome live.
Never heard anything like Scroobius Pip, on the UK hiphop front Fliptrix, Lowkey, Braintax & Jehst spring to mind.
edit: how could i forget pitman 😆
If that's a little bit much for you, then start some Herbaliser, comes from the more jazzy end of the spectrum...
The Nextmen did some great stuff, though a lot was with US rappers.
This is ace but I can't post videos properly in my phone for some reason.
Skinnyman
Skinnyman
Skinnyman
That's it! The best UK hip hop album.
Don't make me say it again.
well what ya wanna know?
when I rhyme I tend ta flow
The Sound of Rum!
If you liked Pip, have you also heard the Dan Let Sac v Scroobius Pip stuff?
Not UK but related to Pip, check out B. Dolan and Sage Francis.
Akala (who's the brother of Ms. Dynamite - remember her?)
Probably the most intelligent/articulate hip-hop artist in the UK.
Foreign Beggars (their older stuff anyway)
Was into hip hop years ago and liked mc duke. He did an awesome tune called im riffin.
Definitely Akala
Great thread
+1 for Braintax. Absolute legend.
Into the flow of guys like Dirty Dike at the moment, try this:

Speaking of Braintax....
From one of my favourite UKHH albums. Old now, but still stands up:
Track down a copy of Rob Life's "Bangers & Mash" mix CD. It's got a great mix of new tracks then delves back into the older stuff like Hardnoise, Hijack, Demon Boyz, London Posse, etc.

Some wicked suggestions thanks all! 🙂
That Akala track is insane....
Got some good stuff to be getting on with. Turns out I've heard some of it before but its not been on my radar...
Cheers.
Akala wins the thread by an incredibly long chalk
conscious lyrics
not UK at all, but if you like Scroobius Pip, you might like Buck 65:
Off the top of my head
Mc mello
Overlord x
Blade
Caveman
Hijack
Demon boyz
The brotherhood
Criminal minds
Jc001 and dj dezire
The f9ss
Sl troopers
Subsonic 2

also like
Kersal Massive FTW
Still love the first Stereo MCs album - 33 45 78. Maybe also add Galliano to the steadily building excellent list!
galliano...saw them at g;asto...motr trip hop/hippy hop than hip hop great though...off to dig the cd out 😀
Some great suggestions folks, especially the Kersal massive... 😉 thanks for so many video links. Awesome. 8)
Lots of good scottish stuff too...
Home of Mistah Bohze ex II tone committee.
This is him doing his Soul U Gotz
And of course Steg G and Freestyle Master
I know it's not hip-hop, but Harry Shotta is the new breed of MC Eksman / Skibadee / MC DET
Hearing them live in a studio environment is 100x better than in a club.
And here's part 2 of Akala.
"I'm a terrible terrorist" ha ha
Check out Aim - a lot of his stuff is instrumental and most vocal tracks are with american rappers - propper original stuff though
Not so familiar with modern stuff but going back a bit, on my list of awesome uk Hip Hop tracks are:
Roots Manuva -Witness
Gunshot - Crime Story
Silver Bullet - 20 seconds to comply
Hardnoise - Untitled
Point blank - Planting Semtex
Blade - Mind of an ordinary citizen
WBI Red Ninja - Bad Horsemen
Killa Instinct - un-united kingdom
I could go on all night, in fact listing those has made me wanna go and dig out all my old vinyl and play it loud!
Seek the Northerner...
Have a look at Roskrypz too.
Quality thread, theres been a few of these kicking about recently.
This tune is a goodun.
Homecut
Skittles and the Manchester crew MC DRS, Broke n £nglish. Doing things their own way.
DRS for a more D&B dubstep feel.
Phi-Life Cypher
Karl Hinds
Ummm....if you don't mind offending everyone around you, then Iron Bridge had some totally awesome tunes. And MC Pitman's first album is a total classic.

DJ format is worth a listen too
nice to see my good buddy getting love on here. He's the great grandad of uk rap and paved the way for scores of rappers.
Surprised theres been no mention (sorry if some HAS mentioned) of phi life cypher.
Also, pioneers in many ways. Stereo mc's.
Gunshot, hardnoise and hijack were great (i once turned hardnoise away from there own gig........ Oops). Ruthless rap assassins, demon boys and mc buzz b are well worth checking out.
Headcase lads are awesome. As is/was mc pitman.
Stig and respek ba rock the freestyle world.
I've never been into grime, but, the uk carved itself a great little scene!
Yeah forgot about Demon Boyz, good shout aa rec rec rec recca recca recognition
Stoked!
Surprised theres been no mention (sorry if some HAS mentioned) of phi life cypher.
I did! me me me!
Speaking of (really) old school, I still love the intro to Derek B's Bullet From A Gun, and making a Phil Collins beat sound good....
I remember seeing Mark B and Blade in Sheffield years ago, and was surprised when one of them came over to me after the gig to give me props for smiling, when everyone else was trying to look gangsta ha ha.
All the Jehst albums should defo be listened to. The first Klashnekoff album too.
But as someone mentioned Harry Shotta up there, not quite hip hop but I feel obliged to post this:
Good to see Silver Bullet get a mention...
Not clicked all the links, hoping someone posted Akala in that school classroom?
Have Aspects been mentioned? Worth a listen.
kid acne. Yeah. The uk's got a real eclectic scene.
big yim -
