I have briefly looked into maybe joining but what are the benifits of this?
Every time someone has an accident on the Road the 'are you a member of the CTC' question gets asked. I assume this is for leagal cover/ advice. Are there are other incentives?
I commute and now being more Roadie orientated I cover a lot of road miles.
So STW, is it worth my while joining?
As always, all advice much appreciated. 😀

There's the legal help/liability cover direct benefits, but more important (to me anyway) is their lobbying power and general looking out for cyclists on things like changes to the highway code etc etc. AFAIK they're the most high profile cyclists organisation in the UK and adding your voice through membership can only be a good thing.

two main benefits, the first third party insurance. You never know!

secondly the CTC is really the only lobby group for cyclists, the bigger it is the stronger a voice they can claim. If you ever want to legally ride on footpaths i think the CTC is the only way to get it done.

As above, plus the 10% discount at nearly all bike shops and 15% off at Cotswold is nice too.

They even have this rather good, if under promoted document on cycling in the country side / off road. Worth a read. A pretty good well though out proposal IMO. If we could get more people behind a system like this and promote it the better.

Well worth a read and more publicity.

i was knocked off in november and it was very reassuring to know i was covered.

the magazine often has interesting articles/ reviews, often of commuter type stuff that i rarely see elsewhere. I know there is a commuter magazine but i wouldn't buy it.

the advocacy side of things is good. getting bikes on trains etc.

the ramblers are cohesive and get what they want through lobbying. by joining the CTC you are recognised by the government (in numbers at least) as a cyclist.

If you race, a silver BC membership gets you 3rd party cover and free legal advice too.

I had a big crash just after christmas. I did a lot of damage to a guys car and my bike and on returning home found out I wasn't covered by my home insurance. it made me think that if I'd hit a pedestrian, things could get very expensive and nasty. I signed up to CTC a few days later, the insurance alone is definately worth it but as above, they do loads of discounts and cyclists rights stuff and the magazine isn't half bad too.

Thanks for the info.

To confuse matters more, I've had a look at the British Cycling site which seems to offer similar incentives. I will be doing a lot of Sportives this year and the thought of Racing has cross my mind too. Maybe the BC membership would be more beneficial to me? 😕

I have been a BC member for a number of years but went for CTC this year. The insurance benefits are mainly the same as for a silver BC membership, but if you want a full racing licence that will cost another £32. Although you can race on a provisional licence, just not amass ranking points.

I become increasingly frustrated with the BC website since the redesign, so made the change.

Having said that, when I rejoin my cycling club for this year i think that includes basic BC membership anyway.

As above really
- an o.k. magazine
- some legal protection
- supporting a body which has the energy to advocate for cyclists
