Cracking ride today, literally.
My beloved Ti hardtail bites the dust.
So, anyone else break anything?
Perhaps WCA can offer up a complimentary entry to the Big Bike Bash to the person who broke the most expensive piece of bike.....
Ah, what you worried about? That'll buff out...
Sorry, a little unkind. Bad luck. 🙁
bummer, heard about it when we stopped for lunch, not ideal, under waranty still?
No worries - the ride was good I had a really good crack today! 😉
I believe the moment I realised it had gone might have been caught on video to boot!
Don't worry though, I am going to console myself with a demo on the new Spot next weekend.
fu - yes it is. I'll be calling said manufacturer next week. I'm sure it'll be fine though.
I am a great beliver in Duck tape, couple of times aroung the frame should be as good as new.
Disclaimer Not evrything thing I post should be taken seriously
Saracens Ho! 😈
Is that a Soda ?.
Ouch!!! Anyone know a decent welder???
What frame is it?
Yes, I did hear about this and what a rotten thing to happen. I heard it was a Soda Ti and still under warranty, is that correct? (another Ti owner here but different manufacturer).
Do hope it gets sorted quickly for you. It's a shame that you will remember this ride for the wrong reasons 🙁
Bit of Araldite'll sort that out.
And don't buy such a cheap bike, next time! 🙄
Oh crumbs... I am/was? seriously considering buying a Soda!!!???
That's right, a Soda. Shame, it was my only working bike!!
JB - great riding bike, no question. These things happen. I believe there is a new version come out soon.
oops, 'coming' obviously...
There is... hasn't totally put me off thought and i believe that Cy Turner's view on customer service is excellent...
The crack doesn't appear to have got that much bigger from when it was noticed. Not that you could give it that "one last ride"
On the bright side you will get the new bike feeling with no outlay 🙂
forge - the reason it didn't get any bigger is because I followed the Bike Magic ride home on the fireroads! 😉
I don't understand why cracks in Ti frames are so common. Everyone who I know that has owned Ti has cracked (half a dozen or so).
I filled my water bottle, didn't drink any of it so emptied it out when I got home and bits of ice came out!! Does that count?
of course the BM way 🙂
Erm, what's the BM way? Sorry to be a bimbo!
it's an association to when we saw a group riding just forest roads, it was suggested they were on a bikemagic alternate ride, turned out to be my own group who'd go a different way 🙂
Oh I see!
auricgoldfinger, bad luck mate, hopefully the warranty will kick in !!!
And No nothing broken, apart from nearly my fingers for being so cold at 1 point...............LoL
I had a Soda crack in the same place last year. Cy sorted it out on warranty with any hesitation.
The later Sodas have additional strengthening in that area apparently. Mine was one of the 1st batch.
What is it with forum rides, this is the 2nd Ti frame i've seen crack now. bad luck, your face was a picture though 🙂
I killed one of my rear pads in the morning so rode with front only in afternoon which wasn't a problem really but checked the fronts tonight and i wore the pads right down to a wafer thin layer, had 6 months out of them so happy really.
I think Forge should get the footage up on youtube - will need a language advisory though! 😆
I'll sort it tomorrow for you 🙂
How much seat post ingagement do you run into your frame?
I broke a spoke in my back wheel! It happened during the afternoon ride. We had just riden the corkscrew and fu_manchu said there was some nice drop offs near by. I think it happened there but didnt notice it untill we were about a K from getting back to the Lookout. A quick trip to Berkshire Bikes in Crowthorne high street on the way home and then stuck in on the jig and trued it up when I got home. Job done.
I know its only a spoke compared to the broken Ti frame of auricgoldfinger but you did ask "who broke what on the swinley ride"?
Matt
you didn't let WCA have a go did you? he's got previous! 😀
Well all I broke was the seal on a bottle of Sloe Gin which made it necessary to drink it and of course my ankle had completely given up by lunchtime.
Great ride in the morning and looking foirward to seeing you all at the Big Bike Bash. There will now be a prize for the most expensive/best mechanical failure during the Big bike Bash!
Sounds like you all had a great day - why don't one of you knock up a ride report (with pics) and mail it to chipps@singletrackworld.com - may be too late for the next issue, but I'm sure folks would like to read it on the Front page?
Ola MrNutt
My reputation as a trail god was fractured when I somersaulted off on an easy downhill! Shards of ego all over the bracken 😀
Sandwich, was that you on the red Orange full-suss? If so, I was just behind you. I saw you shoot off from the start, and the first couple of turns were ok, but you seemed to pick up speed very rapidly. I was thinking 'blimey, this bloke's a pretty decent downhiller!'
For about 30 seconds.
Then, you just went straight on, at one sharp bend. I was going too fast to slow down, and too frightened of people piling into the back of me, to stop, but glad to see you were ok.
It did look good, mind. Full marks for style. Top crash of the day?
auricgoldfinger - letting it know how it felt as he realised he had more bikes to ride.
Contains Bad Language - Early Reaction to Breakage
😆
I guess it had to be short - I recall the language got a bit fruitier after that!
I'm amazed that you managed to crack a Ti frame, but then I am more amazed that other people report this to be something they've seen quite a lot before. Ti frames were always marketed as being able to last a life time - the material doesn't fatigue like aluminium or corrode like steel.
It always used to be written in the MTB press that welding titanium is notoriously hard and is one of the reasons why Ti frames were always so expensive. But the price of Ti frames seems to have almost halved over the last 15 years because of cheaper building and material costs.
I wonder whether the quality is there with these 'cheap' Ti frames that are being manufactured in low cost locations.
I don't think I got the fruitiest language!!
I forgot to put my swingarm protector back on my bike... not a big deal, unless your bike is a Commencal complete with their "commically" bad paintwork quality. I lost a few more chunks of paintwork, right down to the alu 🙁
Nowhere near as bad as cracking a frame though 😯
Just weld the frame 🙂
I know a good Ti welder in Bristol.
