I have some dt swiss 5,1 hope hoops but fancy changing the rims . How difficult is it - is it a world-of-pain-better-off-taking-to-a-bike-shop-or-replacing hard? Fancy changing for stans flow or arch rims.

Also any one now if I can use the same spokes?

Have you ever built a wheel? If not I suggest you take it to the shop 😉

Some good tunes, a pot of tea, cake, Spoke key, copy of the wheelpro pdf book & get on with it.
Yes, even you could do it.o
Easier with a jig, but my last few have been built in the frame / fork.
If you get stuck there's plenty of folk on here can advise.

You need to put your rim & hub dims into a couple of calculators to check the spoke lengths. Too long & you'll bottocm the nipples out, too short they could pull out. You'll need the rims ERTD dim, & the hub spoke hole PCD & flange offsets.

just swaped my very bent rim with a shiny new one, just taped the rims together and moved the spokes one at a time, very easy just took time to make sure they were all tightened uniformally was my first time very imprest with myself

well i have to say that doesn't sound _very_ promising.. maybe reserve judgement until you've gone down a bumpy hill on it.

The ERD of the Arch is 540mm, the DT Swiss 5.1 is 539mm so you can use the same spokes. This vastly simplifys things. Loosen all spokes right off, tape new rim to old (making sure the spokes whole orientation is correct) then swap one spoke over at a time.

Even if you still take it to a shop at the end to get it trued you'll save quite a bit. If you do this leave the spokes loose though.

Wheel building really isn't difficult and it'll save you a fortune when you learn plus make you less dependent on others (which can be really useful when for example a couple of hours before a race, you notice that your rim is cracked...)

Follow one of the various online guide - Sheldon Brown's is good - and just take your time. As suggested, a rim swap is the ideal way to start because you can just tape the new rim to the old one and swap the spokes over (loosen them all first!)

And best of all, in the unlikely event that you really can't manage, just take it all to pieces, take it to your LBS and ask them to build it - nothing will be damaged so you've lost nothing

You'll probably find it cheaper, or at lest not much more expensive to just get another set of Hope hoops, and either sell your current set or keep them as spares.

you dont need to faff with various calculators, you just need a rim with the same (or very close) ERD (effective rim diameter) and obviously spoke count.

Between Takisawa (caveat above) Horatio and Clubber youre sorted. I built my first wheel as a rim-swap maybe 20yrs ago, Ive built loads of wheels and only used Sheldon Brown's guide (I bought Jobst Brandt's book from geek interest but its not a build guide) and whilst I have a jig, a frame or fork and taped-on matchstick does the job. I swapped Mavic 717s for cheap heavy but strong 325s for an alpine trip and swapped em back when I got home.

Gribs is also right, even if you bought Arch Hoops new. Youd sell yours for ~£150, Arch rims are what ~£65 new each and new Stans Hoops are ~£280? You wouldnt have learnt a new skill and gained a sense of pride though.

er,if you're doing a 'tape em together and swap the spokes',make sure the rims are both left or right hand drilled, otherwise the plan won't work.

if you don't understand, read Sheldons ( no not wok boy)guide,if you still don't get it,LBS....
