Got the same sized hub, never built a wheel before

Mavic wheel , bladed spokes, plan was to give it a go, but quite happy to take it to LBS if it ends up wobbly as hell

Do I need a truing stand?

No, it just makes life easier if you can borrow one.  But for a one off, if you have no intention of building another wheel, I’d maybe dump it on a trusted LBS.

You will need a bladed spoke holder of some kind to stop the spokes rotating.  When you dismantle make sure the spokes go into different piles for left and right and you mark which pile is which!

I've swapped hubs in the past and never used a wheel truing stand. Usually follow Sheldon Browns guide then use a ruler strapped to the bike frame to true it. I have also laced the wheel up myself and given it to a bike shop to bring up to tension, has generally cost me about £25.

Same hub, or different ? I say as Mavic use their own type of spokes that may not be compatible with other hubs - e.g. straight and not J bend ones, and depending on the wheel. Some wheels use a specific nipple that needs a special spoke key, rather than a standard one. You've also got to stop the spoke twisting on the build - easier said than done.

Yes.

You don't need the "out" after swapping. If you leave it in you haven't swapped there for swapping it implies its coming out.

Hope it helps.

If I'd never built a wheel before, I may be tempted to swap a rim as that's relatively straightforward. Not so sure I'd try to swap a hub though - that's something I'd rather use someone with a lot more experience.

In fact, my awesomely powerful legs (haha) have twice stripped DT370 hubs beyond repair, and both times got my LBS to replace the hub and rebuild the wheel...

Even though it's the same hub double check it's the same number of spokes.

So... Sat down with a few beers and election debate

Because the straight pull spokes just pop out of the hub I was able to just detension the wheel and remove the hub, leaving the spokes in the rim and put the new hub in, tightened up the spokes enough that it won't fail out

Tomorrow I'll get to work tensioning it
