Hey,

I'm not a runner and everyone that knows me knows that! I hate it. However I have been challenging myself to do a 1/2 marathon in 1hr 40 in aid of a very very important charity in my family.

the trouble is my knees have suffered something terrible and despite looking at numerous ways to fix. I hate backing out of promises made esp to family but the doctors are recommending I stop so guess I should.

Through all this mtbing has been fine. Therefore I'm thinking that as a way of still doing something to raise money I take on an mtb challenge that is so far beyond my comfort zone it is a similar challenge to trying to run!

Any thoughts? If it could be a group/organised event all the better. Preferably a fitness and skill challenge multi day would be good too.

Let me know your thoughts and experiences of 'epic' events

Cheers

Mayhem ? Non bikers will understand the madness of it.

Endurance downhill (Puffer a good shout too, they both need a little explaining but once people understand what you're doing they go, you are out of your tiny mind)

Cynic puffer sounds good. Bit far away though as I'm in Plymouth.

I've signed up for 24hr solo. Not entirely sure why...

You are in Plymouth and you didn't consider Pivot 24/12 solo?
Try to explain to someone that you are going to ride you bike non-stop (ish) for 24 hours..... that will be out of your comfort zone.
I do 12hr solo and that's bad(good)enough for me.
One day I'll do 24.... one day....

F&&k me, six hours solo is bad enough! I'd imagine a half marathon more compares to that than 24hr? I guess it depends on how much cycling endurance experience OP already has?

I don't really do events. Will look at that 1. Never done a 24hr. Longest on a bike has been 6. Been liking look of mayhem and dirty reiver (also gives excuse for a new bike!)

I'll stop selling 24/12 in a bit... but its not like formal event.. it is, yes I know, with a start and a Finish but its more of a camping weekend with some bike riding in between. Ride as much, or as little as you can. I've got friends who do 24hr solo but actually only do about 16hrs as they stop and have a kip half way around. One year a couple did mixed 24hr pairs and only did 4 laps as they spent the rest of the time browsing stalls or visiting the pub...
24hrs will be hell. 12hr solo is still a massive challenge that's on the limits of my ability (14th two years in a row) but with everything else going on including riding through the campsite its FUN!!!

Have you never popped down?

I am no racer but I have done a couple of 24 hour solos. so long as you traet it as a personal challenge rather than a race it can be fine. 6 hr solo is easy - thats just a days ride

I'd start with a 6 or 12 hours ride first - e.g. Gorrick Summer Monkey before trying a 24 if you don't have a big endurance base. BHF do a SDW challenge in the summer - 12hrs-ish and a bit more interesting than going around and around. You could also look at increasing number of MTB ITTs - these are more informal events where you simply set-out to ride a course within a time limit.

Bear Bones 200 next Oct would probably fit the bill.

This will be multi day for sure.

There is a mutter that Terry Smith may line up for this one.
