[Closed] Suggestions please: cranks for ss/1x9 29er?

Building up 29er based on singular swift frame. Will want to run as both ss and 1x9 depending on riding location. For 1x9, will likely run 32t ring with 11-36t cassette; ss ratios tbd.

Not sure about cranks. Don't ever expect to run anything other than single ring on the front. Any suggestions? Have only ever bought double/triples before so no personal experience.

Not looking to spend a fortune: no more than £100, pref a good bit less!

thx.

I use Middleburn RS7 on all of mine (mainly SS/Rohloff). £12 for a long lasting BB (UN54), last for at least a few years at a time.

s/h ones usually cost around £70 with a spider.

Is that true? Main concern was whether 'regular' spider will (a) take small enough ring and (b) work ok with single ring only?

I'd avoid 26er chainsets.

OK, ignorance to the fore: how are 26er chainsets different from 29er?

I was yanking your chain, a chainset is a chainset.

It just makes me chuckle when folk think bars, stems, chainsets or whatever are specific to 26ers or 29ers, which your thread implies.

+1 for the Middleburn cranks. Used them for years with the UNO chainring which comes in 1/8 and 3/32. They look pretty, are stiff and simple.

My new frame has an ebb and is supposed to only take external bb cranks and the Middleburn xtype are too much dosh for me. So I got some race face Duce xc SS ones from CRC for about 120 with bb. Only thing is they are so wide the foul on my shoes all the time.

Chain yanked 😮

Had me worried for a bit. Question was more any limitations on using small single ring with 'standard' cranks. Doesn't sounds like there's any then...?

Off to hang elbow grease tin from a skyhook.

Ahh - good point. Swift frame has EBB - need to check what'll fit. Thanks for prompt.

Swift should be fine as it has a one piece EBB, it's only the split 2 piece niner one that isn't supposed to work (I know people who have ignored this though without to many issues).

Any crank will do. Shimano Deore or SLX will both do the job for not much £££. Just a a non-ramped chainring and some thinner chainring bolts.

Using square taper BB on my swift and fine. I use longer cranks SS on it than I use normally which seems to work very well.

I've got a FSA V-drive single speed chainset (180mm) you can have for a tenner plus postage; it's well used, worn the colour off the arms and comes with a pair of SPDs stuck to them (not seized just couldn't get the leverage to remove) but work perfectly 1x9 for me with the drive side BB spacer removed

I just use Deore cranks on my 26" SS. They'll take a 32t chainring and you won't want/need anything smaller than that.

I've got a Sugino XD on a square taper on my 29er, but that's limited to a minimum of a 34t chainring.

I find Deore to be a bit too bendy for a singlespeed, really liking middleburns on my swift though.

I have a spare set of isis middleburns and a 32t ring which you can have under your budget if you're interested. Email in profile if you are.

I've had bling ones like Paul comp, white industries etc big now all my bikes have deore on except the gryphon which has an lx on, it's the one component on all my bikes that isn't bling as I believe there's that little difference really
