Given your riding ability Amy, I'm sure you could probably ride up there, grind us all into the ground and ride home ๐Ÿ˜€

Trio, if the cars in use give me a shout, I'm supposed to be driving up with my mate but if he can't make it I'll have room (he might not know for sure for a couple of weeks tho).

Might have to come along on this if I haven't got a job yet, if only for the inevitable bust-ups between sfb and the rest of the world

If you come Simon, we can compare notes as to the route from Gars to Weasdale nurseries.

We always take This one But it seldom seems used by anyone, let alone bikers. The gate as Gars is rusted to buggery.

Do you take this also or This one?

I will try and make it, there is nothing on the calendar but that doesn't mean the car isn't already in use

If you need a lift from Bolton, I can pick you up on the way- I'm in Accrington..

Drop me a line...

If you come Simon

I shall, provided I can get a lift from Lancaster, as we haven't even scheduled a ride for that day yet. I might persuade a few more Bog Trotters too.

Do you take this also or This one?

yes, I always go through the rusted gate :o)

thanks Danny & Johnny, I'll be in touch closer to the day ๐Ÿ™‚

Surely it's a 'chain' of MTB'ers

I like 'throng' but perhaps 'pong' would be more accurate ?

I may well be able to make this. Will be bringing my stepdad, who is reasonably fit and has volunteered to ride the SS ๐Ÿ™‚ How long will it take to drive to the start point from Glenridding?

Been looking forward to riding up north for ages, this sounds ideal. I'll be bringing cake to appease the northern hoardes... Riding skills likely to remain rooted firmly in the south ๐Ÿ˜‰

Count me in. It's about time I did a STW ride. Especially seeing as I've never ridden around there anyway.

I'll try and persuade a friend along as well. ๐Ÿ˜€

I'd allow about an hour - quicker to go north and join the M6 at Penrith I think.

Past experience has shown the initial enthusiasm for these rides always exceeds the actual number who turn up, but in this case, jesus, I've lost count of how many there are.

As per usual, I'll post a roll call thread up the week before to get more accurate numbers.

I'm all prepared for the climb

it's quite simple -
1) locate the totty with the best arse
2) follow :o)

all in the best possible taste, obviously! No drooling or pawing, and at a discreet distance...

...or there's the Veela option:
1) locate the cutest totty
2) ride a little way in front displaying your skillz

I am not coming but I was just looking at the route and wonderring .....

From Newbiggin there appears to be a track running south up to Randgill Top.
Is that rideable and then could you drop down onto the outgoing path or drop down eastwards onto that other bridleway .

Interestingly according to streetmap the 1:50,000 shows the route mostly as bridleway while 1:25,000 has it as a footpath.

MadBillMcMad

The track you mention is very boggy in places, only good to ride after a hard frost, or very long dry spell.

It disappears into tussocky grass in places, and its not really a viable route imho.

I'm planning on doing your Dunnerdale loop this saturday as a bit of practice.

This Calf ride, although the start looks tough, the downhill looks nice and long

the fastest we've ever done it was 5h15m when frozen. I'd allow a minimum of 6 hours

A nice slow pace or is that pegging-it-6hours? ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

Plus any bailout points?

given all the recent rain I'd say 6 hours-pegging-it ๐Ÿ™

Plus any bailout points?

1) at the north end of Bowderdale one could turn west and take the road back to Sedbergh (rather dull though)
2) at Handley's Bridge (near Murthwaite) you could join the A683 back to Sed.

neither bailout is any shorter than the main route, just easier tarmac

You could bail at the summit of the Calf and either retrace you the ascent, or you could descend via Cautley Spout. Much shorter and misses the rides signature singletrack. However, once you have done Bowderdale, then you are pretty much at the furthest point from the start.

I hadn't even considered those, as they'd be too soon in the ride for all but the most novice riders!

There are 2 excellent downhills, Bram Rigg and White Fell, both about 400 uninterrupted vertical metres of steep grass strewn with rocks, but they're evening 2 hour rides.

Cautley OTOH is vertigo territory, very steep and a vestigial track...
