Stripped threads on...

[Closed] Stripped threads on XT crank arm, is it now scrap?

Had swapped pedals from one bike to another the other day and by the look of it didn't tighten the drive side pedal, doh! Quick poottle round the field with the young lad and the dog this morning and noticed a significant amount of play on said pedal, by the time I'd stopped to investigate it had totally stripped the threads from the crank arm, double doh!

Is there a fix for this or is a case of splashing the cash and buying new cranks. XT by the way so not the cheapest!

Cheers

Depending on how bad the damage is, thread the pedal in from the back to clean the threads up. Sometimes works, and nothing to lose.

What level of chainset? M760 or M770? 9 or 10 speed?

Cheers guys, the I had read about the pedal in the opposite side but there are no, and I mean no threads left in the crank.
Is helicoiling a professional job? I am technical and would give it a go.

Cheers

Helicoiling isn't difficult but you need to buy the kit which is £40 including the bit, tap and helicoils. The hardest part is making sure you drill it straight.

Cheers, cranks are 10sp and XT785 if memory serves me.

2x10 if that matters.

I wouldn't worry about getting it drilled straight. If there's no thread left, then that will be about the right size to start tapping into!

I was only asking about crank spec as I have some spares, but no 10 speed stuff.

I think Iain distribution used to have "problem solvers" for just such an event.

Aren't the crank arms and spider the same, just the chainrings different?

piced up a pair of these on sale, cromo pedal inserts, bit heavier than XT, but dont really notice but feel a lot more rigid, they are 7050 Al- not the old cheese like 6061s, comes with a bb as well.

Gravity light FSA

Yeah, sorry. Ison. That's the trouble when you look at the keypad rather than the box the letters appear in.
