In trying to recapture my youth I recently read an article on tricks for the trails; bunny hops, manuals etc. No matter how many times I re-read it, I could not tell the difference between a stoppie and an endo. In my day there was no such thing as a stoppie (that I remember) but much fun was had practising endos without going straight over the bars.
Can anyone tell me the difference?
You're on the front wheel in both, but stopped in an endo, rolling in a stoppie
I'd class a stoppie as rolling to a stop with the rear wheel in the air, an endo would be a dead stop with the wheel in the air
It's to do with how long the delay is before you smash you teeth in on a rock
May I be of some [url=
Endo originally was short for 'End Over', or an over the bars moment. Its also used to describe coming to a stop with your back wheel in the air pivoting around your front braked wheel, not necessarily going over the bars.
'Stoppies' I've always understood as rolling endo's, doing a wheelie on your front wheel rather than back one. They need not end in coming to a halt, which is kind of confusing as the 'stop' part of the name implies coming to a halt.

sootyandjim. Nice try, but your "assistance" was misleading. Under the definition of endo:
"In BMX riding, "endo" used to be a synonym for front wheelie."
Then under the definition of front wheelie:
Also called a "nose wheelie" or "stoppie."
Then under the definition of stoppie:
see front wheelie
Maybe the fact that as a kid I rode a BMX means they are one and the same. However as an MTBer I shall accept that stoppie means rolling endo. What do they mean on my road bike??
i'd say stoppies are done in the car park with the front brake
endo's are what you do to get round switchbacks
The reason for overlapping terms is that they come from different backgrounds. I believe stoppie is a motorbike term, but endo is from BMX.
yet in the recent MBUK "how to" they appear as different "skillz", albeit with the same explanation as far as I can tell. Granted I don't lose sleep over this, but I've never quite got to the bottom of it. I may reinvent them as stendoes...
...which are where the back wheel only gets 2cm off the ground and you look like a fool
I concur that an endo is a sudden stop with back wheel coming off the ground.
stoppy is a rolling nose-wheelie, either coming to a stop or not.
