How did they get it out of interest? I take it you had your lifestyle insured?

Thanks all. They broke into the garage. Smashed a window. Is insured but that isn't the point. Sentimental and all.
Went around Southmead this morning and spotted a youth on my bike. Immediately rang the police with my location and no one was sent. No available units. Thought of dashing out of the car to run after it but knowing how rough it is around there I didn't want to run the risk of being stabbed or worse. Police are too scared to touch them I'm guessing. God knows where it is now. What the hell happens next. Why wont they do anything? Isn't that what we pay them for. Serve and protect and bring people like this to justice!!!!

Dont call police if you see it- call an ambulance and say that youve just beaten up a bike thief. Police will arrive soon enough.

if it had been me I'd have steamed in and got the bike back and dealt with the consequences.

not sure whether to congratulate you on your restraint or not, really.

I'd probably of knocked him off with the car then reversed over him just to be certain. It's not like they'd do you for murder now is it?

Anybody seen that Panorama episode where two reporters go to live in Southmead Bristol? Not the nicest of places. Sure it's not the worst. But still hostile.

North of Southmead Road ain't so bad.... but anything around Greystoke Ave is really not nice - the Standard of England 'pub'([s]centre of crime[/s]) should be avoided at all costs. Will keep'um peeled.

I suggest you make a formal complaint to the Police about their failure to turn up when you identified your bike.

Or get down to the nick on Southmead Road and ask the Sector Inspector what he intends to do about it.

Might also be worth trying to get a photo of the guy riding it as evidence.

Result. My dad's bike was also stolen yesterday. And he just made a pass past Lydney Rd in Southmead and spotted his bike thrown down outside. Call the police, I called also and he has now got his bike back. Just mine now. Here's hoping.

No not at all, I can't give any details at the moment but an arrest was made in Southmead recently for possession of a stolen bike.

The Police will act if they see the bike during their normal duties, just don't expect the helicopter up and the SPG turning up when you ring them, you won't be priority.

sorry to hear that Zesty. There is an officer based at Southmead station who is in charge of investigating Bristol bike crime. Hopefully he'll be along in a while, I know he monitors this site. As might someone with some security advice, which I took very seriously earlier this year after several thefts from roughly in your area.

I went on a Southmead tour too, but like you realised I probably wouldnt have done anything on my own if I'd seen any of my bikes. LOL at Guido's advice!

Bristol needs some sting operations, I'm sure this is a case of Pyramid Nicking where bikes get passed on to a few Mr Bigs.

Still, at least we're the UK's first Cycling City......

Followed home by two lads on bikes in that area after a ride last weekend. Luckily saw them and diverted. They were definitely casing us. Has happened before and I confronted them. They scarpered that time.

Keep an eye out who's following you home when your on your bikes or in the car with them on top.

Indeed csb. Be aware. I have been in the past when I thought I was being followed.
These were just teenagers. And they were casing local houses and knew what they wanted. As there is no other way of telling what was in the garage. Unless you knew.
Bristol does need some sting operations. Or a change in it's procedure. Damage is being done and property is being stolen. Hear too many cases of it year after year. It really is depressing to think that proper action is not being taken. The legal system is too soft on young offenders.
I fear that that was the last time I will ever see my bike. Being ridden by some young sod who never paid for what was my bike. Will be sold for next to nothing. Which cost me an arm and a leg. Took a year or more to get it just right. Which was much loved as it was my fitness and hobby and stress relief. They will never look after it and only cause decent people grief. Raise insurance premiums and raise council taxes through police resources and time. This has got to change!!!

Somewhere between 76 and 80 Lydney Rd is where many bikes are being taken to.

78 then? 😉

I agree though, they do all seem to end up in Southmead which puts places like horfield, henleaze, westbury on trym etc right under the thieving scrotes radar.

I had a bike nicked last sept. Was selling it on ebay, agreed to allow a 'buyer' (Dave) to view, then hey presto someone breaks into my shed and nicks my bike, stand, helmet and camelbak.

Using the details I had, police were able to ascertain that 'Dave' had done this plenty of times before and served time for it too. Member of a gang based in Bristol whose full-time job was bike-nicking.

Was truly gutted. My local copper was fantastic, but the law couldn't allow them to enter his house without more evidence. The little sh!t walks free to ruin other people's days.

He needs his dole money stopped, his cushy free house removed and be put into hard labour. The roads are a mess at the moment and he could work on those for his food.

I feel for you; I hope more than the insurance, you get justice.

I was helping to look for this bike yesterday (hey ZB 8) ). Southmead Police are usually quite good with bike stuff, I was quite disappointed by their response to this, though in retrospect we might have got further by asking to speak to somebody beyond the front desk. Who knows? They might have had something serious on, tying up a lot of officers.

Perhaps some sort of concerted effort is required to let Avon & Somerset (and other forces) know how big a deal bike theft is. The desk staff seemed surprised when they learned the £££ of the Zesty, they wouldn't necessarily understand the hours of work that go into modifying and tuning.

Bristol does need some sting operations.

They already do. A lot. And it works but only small fry.

What he said.

Somewhere between 76 and 80 Lydney Rd is where many bikes are being taken to.

They pulled this guy and his three sons in 2 years ago but couldnt make it stick. The four of them, plus various other scum mates always have very very expensive bikes and/or bits but somehow they managed to get away with it. They are all scaffolders and seem to be paid in cash.

Thanks Antony. Have sent him a mail. Legend. I really want something to be done about the polices procedure in how they catch these blighters. They are running a muck and bike theft is out of control in Bristol. A cycle city indeed. Will be attending the next local PACT meeting and have a rant.

Have you tried contacting directly the North Bristol Burglary Team at Southmead Police Station? 0117 945 45 03 I've had loads of results with these lads, they're mountainbikers, phukking HATE bike thieves and are like The Sweeny on Red Bull.
