Clues please...I am obviously being thick and don't want to risk hitting it with the wrong hammer on the wrong end....

Screw the SFN onto the thread(with the tangs pointing back towards the handle), press the SFN against the end of the steerer, and tw*t it with a big hammer until it's in far enough.

one of the more pleasurable pieces of fettling IMO. Use as big a hammer as you can find and get VFM out of that tool.
