i was running 34:17 as that was a straight swop from my 26"SS, it has been suggested i should try a smaller chainring/sprocket because of the wheel size, is this true? if so what's ideal?

Bigger wheel means a bigger gear for a given ratio.

32:18 on a 29er is about the same as 32:16 on a 26er.

34:18 on a 29er is about the same as 32:15 on a 26er. You're slightly higher geared than this.

Is the gearing working for you? If so, leave it. If not, either stick on a smaller chainring or a bigger sprocket depending upon what you have available.

34:18 on a 29er is about the same as 32:15 on a 26er.

32:17 on a 650b is about the same as 32:16 on a 26er, but no one cares about 650B do they :-0

My experience is that you can comfortably run the same on your 29er as on the 26" wheel even though it is a higher gear ratio.

Gearing works out about 10% higher so drop 3-4 teeth on chainring or gain 2 on the cog.

My experience is that you can comfortably run the same on your 29er as on the 26" wheel even though it is a higher gear ratio.

So you make it 10% harder to push those pedals on a 29er. You must be lazy on your 26er.

I run 32x18 most of the time; occasionally change to 32x20 for long hilly rides.

My pal did NyA and CyB comfortably with 32:18 on his Gary Fisher 29er.

I just tend to change the rear cog as its generally cheaper than a new chain ring, sorry RD a bit late for you now though.

I'm after a 20T for mine, mainly because I'm so fat and my commute takes in Burton Dassett country park twice a day.
