[Closed] SRAM PC-991 chain - hollow pin or not?

I'm in the market for a new chain. I'm fairly light (70kg) and ride predominately XC stuff down South on a 120mm Trek EX. I'm tempted by the PC-991 hollow pin chain but want to know if anyone has suffered any problems with the hollow pin design. Any users out there with good or bad experiences they can share?

Thanks!

The hollow pin failed on me a couple of times, but then I was riding probably a bit more 'AM type stuff', rather than 'out & out XC'? As a result I don't trust the hollow pin anymore (but that's personal) and have now ridden the PC971 without issue for the last 12 months.

Can really see how riding AM type stuff' rather than 'out & out XC' would effect the chain.

In fact proper XC riders probably have the biggest thighs and can probably put the most force through a chain so I would have thought XC riding was more punishing for the chain ?

I one again general XC with some XC races seems fine to me.

85kg here and same kind of riding, I have never broken a standard SRAM chain and I didn't break a hollow-pin - tbh I noticed no difference (in strength, shifting performance, wear etc), it just weighed a bit (a tiny bit) less (I think I compared the two and it was less than 20 grams!!!)

I'm not sure about hollow pins. Surely within one ride the 'voids' will be fill of crud and so virtually as heavy as a solid pin anyway?

Not really sure myself? But maybe the chain slapping bout all over the place on the tech stuff whist having force applied? And with XC riding I would expect a more consistent force on the chain? Who knows, all I know is mine snapped! (on more than one occasion!!)
