Advice please. Just swapped my boys bike over from 3x9 to 1x9. I've replaced long cage rear mech with a medium cage in case of wanting to go 2x9. When in biggest gear on cassette the chain line seems pretty far out and noisy. It's got a square taper bb, should I replace with a shorter one to help chain line?

you don't say whether you have replaced the chainset or just removed the unnecessary chainrings.
[url= http://sheldonbrown.com/bbsize.html ]sheldon brown[/url] might be your friend in working out what BB width you need. Sounds chain line but it would be odd for it suddenly to be a problem if it is the same chainset.
Might be obvious but are you running your front ring in the outer or middle position? Middle will give a better chainline.
