I don't want to build, but I've got a set of rims that i'm going to get built up and I do want to buy the spokes myself to keep the build cost to a minimum, but it all looks intimidatingly difficult to calculate. Can anyone suggest the best way to find out?

There's this: http://www.wheelpro.co.uk/spokecalc/
or this: http://www.prowheelbuilder.com/spokelengthcalculator/
This: http://www.sapim.be/spoke-calculator
and this: http://spokes-calculator.dtswiss.com/Welcome.aspx?language=en
and that's just the first four lines of a google search.
Plug your details into each and see if they agree...
Just look up the ERD for the rim, & the offset & flange dims for the hubs. Spoke holes will be about 2.4mm & choose 3cross pattern. Be about 262mm IIRC.
