Firstly, glad you're OK 😀
Now, let's get this out of the way early doors -
wearing the helmet made you ride more dangerously (risk compensation)
it made your head a bigger target (rotational injuries)
it may not have saved you (anecdotal evidence)
your straps were incorrectly fastened (helmet moves and makes things worse)

You seem to have the ability to spell the words lucky and reckon knocked out of you, too. Glad you're otherwise ok, though.
What kind of lid was it? I split a Giro xen a few years ago and they gave me crash replacment for about a third of the cost of a new helmet.
