[Closed] Spiderless crank for 1x10

I want a spiderless crank for my 1x10 setup to fit one of the upcoming XX1-style chainrings in 28t flavour to (please PLEASE don't question my ability to choose my own gear rating, ok thx).

The thing is that I can't seem to find any at prices comparable to say SLX - XX1 is actually among the cheaper options. Did I miss anything? Anyone except SRAM making them? Other options to achieve what I want? Going on a Soul, 73mm bb shell.

I wouldn't really mind XX1, but I'm thinking that replacing chainrings will be more expensive (unless the 3rd party options for regular cranks turns out to be a ripoff too).

While a 28t fitted to the granny position on my current SLX cranks is an option it will look ridiculous so I'd really prefer a "proper" setup.

X9 and above are spiderless but not cheap as they tend to come with rings, you can pick up xx1 for not stupid money from some german sites.
Xx1 rings are pricey, you could runa bling ring if you wanted. You wouldnt get the longer teeth of the xx1 but its a nice clean way to run a single ring.
Just remeber that sram chainsets dont come with bbs.
Just reread your post and dont think I really told you znything you didnt know, there are some non groupset sram cranks that are compatible as well, s4000 or something I think.

Modern and spiderless is SRAM or Middleburn.

Spiderless rings for SRAM is MRP, NSB or seemingly soon Works Components who seemt to be shamelesly using SRAMS XX1 tooth design: www.facebook.com/workscomponents

You wouldnt get the longer teeth of the xx1 but its a nice clean way to run a single ring.
EDIT ^^ The works above for xx1 style teeth.

I wanted a Middleburn 6 months ago, but i emailed a few times with a question and got nowhere.. shame as i still have a few original rs7's and wanted to continue running them.

The latest X7 are spiderless too, a slightly cheaper option.

Otherwise you need to dig through chainsets... Middleburn can be run spiderless...

seriously though, why are you running a 28T on the front?

Yeah, I'm talking about the XX1 style chainrings that seems to hit the market soon. e*13, Blackspire, Works and these guys are all working on them, and at least Works and Wolftooth will offer them in spiderless flavour it seems.

I'll keep looking, if I could find a good deal on X7 or X9 that would be great. XX1 aren't sold with anything less than 32t fitted from what I've seen, so either way I'd have to count the price of a chainring into the calculation.

Never thought about it before but the spider seems to be removable on XX1 as well. Does that mean that I can fit any chainring made for 10spd spiderless cranks on that? Would the chainline suffer (the spider seems to offset the ring quite a bit)?

Ah, thats the other lot, wolf tooth. I would run the standard rings but my god the spiderless rings are fugly, i mean snowflake?

The works one looks OK to me, just a version of the mrp one really....

E13's ring also looked nice, though dont know if that will be for Hive chainsets only...

expensive way of doing things though, especially as xx1 chainsets seem to come without the bb.

28tooth would be a good option for running a lower ratio cassette, or for 12/24hr racing the lower, easier gears could be useful for certain courses. I've just bought a xx1 crank from germany for £185 w/o BB

Nothing wrong with this though IMO

RRP is the same for X9 and XX1 (admittedly excluding BB), though obviously it would be easier to find deals on the former (and then there's X7). I might be prepared to pay for XX1 though, especially if I can keep the cost of replacement chainrings down by removing the spider and fitting something like the above. Is that daft?

Okay, so I found a barely used S1400 crank in the area for a decent price. Any reason not to go for that now and then just wait for some of the chainrings mentioned above to hit the market?

White Industries and Paul Components do spiderless cranks too. Not sure whether the interface works for you though.

I'm not convinced all S1400 can be run spiderless, so best confirm that before you buy.

It appears that the difference between S1400 and X7 is the removable spider on the S1400, though I might be wrong. I did ask just to be sure.

However, Merlin has a good deal on X9 and that means I could get 170mm which I'd really prefer to the 175mm on the used S1400 if I'm being picky...

If we look past the crank length for a second though, what's the difference between S1400/X7 and X9? Weight seems to be almost identical.

Still a bit 90's look for me, much prefer this from works: [img] [/img]

Plus, if i can support a UK business i will, other than hope and betd who else actually makes stuff in the uk anymore? - Oh middleburn but as i say i just couldnt get in touch with them, or i would be running one now. - Middleburn have done this single ring spiderless thing for years!

I think in a matter of months SRAM will catch up, no way they will let these small companies steal their thunder and take sales away from their products with their own tech....

What's wrong with a SLX crankset, a 28T granny and a Granny God?
I don't think it looks ridiculous...

For some reason I didn't even consider a bash to cover it up, despite using one right now. That doesn't look bad at all. It depends if any of the new style chainrings are released in the correct BCD and size as losing the chainguide is a big part of why I'm looking to change.

I know Wolf Tooth was supposed to offer a ring exactly like that (offset to offer acceptable chainline too) but it's removed from the site which can't be a good sign. Seen here:

Interesting stuff this, odd that they seem to be putting so much effort into spiderless designs, you'd think it's a small sub-market.

Maybe having the chainring in line with the 4th biggest sprocket on a 9 speed cassette is not great, what do I know? 😉

Svalgis, with a 73mm BB you can play with the shims and get a better alignment.

I know. What chainring are you using? Inner guide?

I'm using a 10 speed XT chain set , using the inner ring at 28 T and an old 32 t ring as a bash guard, no issues so far.

svalgis-I'm using or have previously SRAM X9, XO and XX1 cranks to run 28t MRP Bling Rings and SLX with 28t granny. I think the SRAM/spiderless works really well (better than a 28t granny) as the chain line is great. I also really like the spiderless system-just makes sense to me.

X9 cranks can be picked up cheap enough if you go second hand. I think X9 with Bling ring is the best of the options I have used TBH.

Would it be inappropriate to mention I have some nearly-new X0 carbon crank arms to sell, at this point? Yes?

S1400 does have a removable spider, X9 is a more machined version of the same.

And I have a brand new 104bcd spider for XX/X0 which takes the std 120bcd down to a more usable size.

In the for sale section if anyone's interested.

I use a cheap Alivio and no inner guide. The chainring is for 8 speed but works great with my 9 speed drive train. The teeth are quite tall and flat so that they hold the chain well even if I do lost the chain occasionally. I will soon change for a clutch derailleur and hope that it will be enough to hold the chain in place.

Xc bike has a middle burn one and also is spot on
