Right now, without googling to see other deals, I'd look at the ~£69 Das Boot and if you're concerned about your feet getting hot over the summer, the ~£25 Trail Shoe at PlanetX.

Did exactly the same thing at beginning of lockdown and bought Shimano ME3’s. Really comfortable and secure, very happy with these.

~£69 Das Boot

Ooh they look good. Decent reviews too. What do you reckon size wise for thick winter socks (one of the reviews says size up)?

Shimano shoes look good on both types of bikes but saying that if you are using them on a MTB will mean you need the MTB pedals on your road bike which does not look that great fine on gravel or CX bike are you size 43? have a used pair on classified with shimano mtb cleats.

Shimano ME2/3/4 depending on budget. Don't worry about people telling you SPD's don't look great on a roadbike; when you're clipped in nobody can really see anyway 😀

Just get a set of 520 spds, nobody apart from dobiejessmo cares what they look like 😉
There is the bonus of having two sides to clip in to while you get used to spuds,
not sliding about on road cleats and there are plenty nice looking MTB shoes to choose from.
🙂

Sports Direct do a great low cost selection of Cycling shoes, and a great fit as well, no cleats they come with the pedals.
