Aquaplaned the road bike through a foot of water this morning down the Portway in Bristol, but as much as it was grim, it was fun too.

Was gentle on the cobbles though, for obvious reasons.

Was nice to have an empty changing room and bike locking stand too 🙂

Anyone else battle through the wild stuff this morning?

I'd planned to ride in, then saw the weather forecast last night, and thought '**** that!'

Autumn was nice while it lasted though. All 6 days of it. Best baton down the hatches until it stops raining next May

EDIT: if my mind hadn't already been made up, it would have been at 3.30 this morning, when I was awoken by the sound of wheely bins being blown down the road 😯

Binners, we had a member of staff email saying he was WFH because his train had been cancelled due to the rain.

I emailed back saying 'see him next July'.

Dammit eoghan, I knew there had to be a simpler way of not having to wear wet socks for the ride home!

Yes! Plenty of 6 inch deep puddles to contend with, was soaked through. I've got proper mudguards but the front one seems to direct all the water onto my feet so my trainers are creating a nice damp patch on the office carpet now.

Other than that, enjoyable!

Race Blades keep the worst off, but no substitute for full-on SKS jobbies (maybe try mounting the latter with P-Cips?)

I did. No other choice. I don't have a car and I'm not getting on the peasant wagon for anybody. 7 miles of the A6 through Stockport was interesting but no near deaths until I turned into the work car park and a dozy sod in a Golf nearly did for me.
All good fun.

i wasn't gonna let a bit of water stop me from making my first commute on my new roadrat i picked up on saturday.
and to be fair, it wasn't actually that bad, but it's only 4 miles into the centre of manchester on pretty flat roads.
not fitted mudguards yet either, so i did get a bit wet but we have showers here at my work and plenty of secret spots to dry clothes out (the perks of working in IT support- access to rooms that nobody else can get into)...

Yup made it! I had my reservations but I later found out my wife had to turn around and come home due to flooding to work from home. And when I got to this, I felt smug albeit moist. Normally no traffic this far up until at least an hour later…

Not today, day off. A light sprinkle of rain is no excuse. Mudguards and a decent jacket are all that's needed. Will be riding tomorrow. And the day after... (I don't have a car)

Forgot spare socks.

Fundamental, schoolboy, etc.

The Schoolboy error, is not keeping a spare set at work all the time, for just such commando emergencies. Although I did once spend a day walking around our open plan office in road cleats and a suit after a shoe/commute mix up after the holidays.

I clipped in in this horrid rain this morning for the first time. Slippy on those leaves!

I have continental clicks 23s. Wondering if this is suitable for a London commute? Would wider tyres be better? 28s? Or I have the CX mud type tyre but hear that those with treads are worse in the rain? Very scared about slipping over right now, especially now I am clipped in! Any help would be V much appreciated!

Last winter I had a MTB with thick thick slicks on and was fine...but this new CX bike seems a little different to handle unsurprisingly!

I have a physio appointment later today and judging by the way it's tipping it down and the forecast, I'm in for a lovely little journey. Bloody stuff is heavy and vertical right now.

Maybe if I don the mudguards it'll go away...

The rain doesn't bother me that much. Once you're wet, you're wet.

Its this bloody wind. My commute takes me over some high, very exposed hills. When its like this, you can come over the top of a brow, into the teeth of the wind, and virtually grind to a standstill. Not much fun when you throw in some horizontal rain. A bit like being sand-blasted

Oh yes, wrung out all my kit in the sink when I got there. Watching the radar pic just swirling around us, looks like a repeat on the way home. Embrace the wet.

Motorbiked in, as like every day. Heine Gericke kit just about holding out. Solid queues most of the way in, because of:
- One diversion from a busy road ONTO my route.
- Two sets of roadworks
- Two floods
- One upside down car
- One uprooted tree (possibly uprooted by aforementioned car)
- Bristol.

Biblical! 😆

Us..! - Tandem commute crew. New earlier this year and haven't had to ride it in a proper strong cross wind yet, so the return leg may be a bit more of a challenge than the morning was. Bit windy coming in but nowt special; the heavy rain is due to arrive in Dundee later on. So far, it feels pretty planted on normal roads and easy tracks.

Caught the bus. Like pretty much every time I don't cycle (usual excuses: feeling ill/torrential downpour/broken bike), I regretted it pretty much immediately. A long wait, expensive ticket, dodgy driving. And I shall regret it even more after the return journey. The upside is: it will now be another 6 months before I convince myself not to cycle again.

The Schoolboy error, is not keeping a spare set at work all the time, for just such commando emergencies.

+1 - learnt that one the hard way too! I now keep a complete outfit at work, including shoes and emergency socks/grundies. Plus a good supply of baby wipes, multi-tool and a couple of spare tubes.

That is awesome! Do you get a "car sharing" allowance?

and my stealth tights need reproofing,

According to a bloke on the Endura stand at the Bike Show earlier in the year, there's a membrane that keeps the water out. If this goes, you get wet, no matter how much proofer you use.

Indeed. I have a full set of danger items at work. Undies, socks, t-shirt and jeans. Today however I forgot my normal glasses so I'm sat here in my riding glasses. I need to bring some spare contact lense in, just in case.

if true that sucks, they aren't very old and haven't had much use*/washes, I've looked after them pretty well. Was disappointed with a bit of water ingress this morning, they have been perfect until now. Bit of googling this morning suggested a reproof and they'd be fine again.

*don't normally use them for commuting

went riding this morning (7.45am) it was raining lightly but the trails were still dry as its been dry for weeks and the trail surfaces are still hard

got home with a light spray of mud on me and my bike, threw a bucket of warm soapy water at my bike and all the mud fell away, including the past 2 months of 'trail dust'

no complaints from me, though I did have to wash my jacket, gloves and helmet liner

I went in an hour early to beat the rain. A good decision as i hardly got wet, but by the time I was showered, you could hear the rain beating down on the office roof.
I even got to ride home through the puddles in the sunshine.

I rode in this morning, I go swimming some mornings before work as well, I squelched up to the reception desk dripping all over the floor "adult swim please" the woman behind the counter looks up and says "is it worth it love" 😐 this did not improve my mood.

Had an offer of a lift home but decided to decline, was fine apart from putting wet shoes back on.

No special privileges for the tandem crew, except perhaps car traffic does give us a bit more space than they do for a single bike, so that's no bad thing. After last night's return leg experience, I can also confirm that it is definitely more stable in strong cross winds, you definitely feel more connected with the road. No Goretex required. Just get wet and ride harder; we're still just using light wind jackets so far.

Walked home

Was out in it at work all night, gave a patient a piggyback through flooded water and waded along the A1 in 2 feet of water to rescue a guy who couldn't work out how to get his stalled car moving.

All in a days work for the NHS.
