I still haven't found what I'm looking for....
I'm currently on a super gravity Rock Razor which I like a lot but it prefers dry and rocky, which doesn't always happen, so I'm tempted with something with bigger knobs for when it's muddier/soilier/wetter rocks.
I need a pretty burly casing, so the SuperG works well, which would suggest that maybe the Hans Dampf SG is the obvious choice?
I have a Minion DHF WT on the front which I love but I've not had any luck with Maxxis EXO casings out back - maybe the latest ones are better/tougher? And I don't really need a dual ply/DH casing - that is perhaps overkill. I've also tried a WTB Vigilante (both compounds) but that was terrible on wet rocks.
[this is 27.5 on a 140/160 trail bike, on a EX511 rim, with the odd enduro thrown in]
What do you think?
Just put a bargain-tastic Maxxis Griffin DD on the back of my bike (190mm travel also EX511 rim).
I ran the DP version in 26" for bike park days and it was great - fast rolling but decent grip.
It's a very underrated tyre IMO but seems that they are discontinuing it.
26x4.0 On One floater
700x42 WTB resolute
29x2.4 Bontrager XR4 team issue
29x45mm IRC Mythos XC Semi Slick
Both of my bikes (650B and 29er both full suss) have a Maxxis HR2 EXO on the back, a versatile all rounder but when part worn they seem to become noticeably slower rolling.
I'mon the rock razor for most of the year but when I'm not, it's the dhr2. Rolls OK, grips well, lasts well, pick your carcass. Very good tyre.
(the latest Hans Dampf is actually not a bad tyre... But it still wears fast because of all the square edges, and once those edges break up they grip much less well too. Gets better with every version but still not great over its life)
ikon, because i like to get my drift on...
26 x 2.3 ground control
650b x 2.4 ardent
Ta. The DHR II Exo+ looks promising, although it's pricey.
Yes get the new HD in SG, great rear tyre.
The new 2.4 Maxxis Rekon looks a nice tyre, but see some crazy prices for it.
29x2.4 Ardent x2
27.5x2.35 HRII
27.5x2.4WT DHRII
26x4.8 Minion FBR
29x2.3 Purgatory
DHRII
Been running the 2.3 on the smuggler for trail riding and the 2.4 on the back of the enduro. The 2.4 on the enduro is pretty worn, so thats being swapped out for the same, but in Exo+. Reasoning behind the exo+ is for Ardrock and a week in Scotland in September.
Recently ran a DHF on the back in italy for an uplift holiday, quite surprising how much less braking traction the DHF has compared to the DHRII.
2.5 DHF WT on the front and 2.3 not WT DHF on the back. Both Exo casings both on 30mm internal rims.
I have a Minion SS 2.3 mounted up on my spare wheel (25mm flow ex rim) for when STOPS BLOODY RAINING!!!
Next rear tyre will be EXO+ or DD if the price is reasonably right.
any good places for Maxxis prices?
DHR2 Exo+ is £58 at CRC
weird that people are having issues with an EXO casing. I'm a biffer and like rocks/roots, and i've never torn an EXO casing.
Running DHR11 WT EXO on the 180mm bike and the traction is great.
2.3 Agressor is the perfect all year round tyre for me, will probably go Exo+ for the next one.
Rolls quick and copes with everything but thick mud. Luckily my local trails are mainly rocky.

The new HD is meant to be better but I really didn't rate the old one in anything muddy.
New Hans Dampf is a marked improvement on the old one. Only issue I have had is it comes in the soft compound with no ‘speedgrip’ or harder compound option which has meant mine is nearly ready for the bin a couple of months in. That said rolling resistance is great for such a soft compound tyre. Probably going to go back to a HR2 if this rain keeps coming as I doubt I’ll be back on the RR any time soon
The new Hans Dampf 2.35 does come in Speedgrip. But it seems that at the moment it only comes as original supply to bike manufacturers.
I've seen them on the back wheel of Cubes.
2.6 Butcher for £25 in the sale.
Feels OK to me but I've never really noticed any difference with different tyre combos.
Hans Dampf 2.35 does come in Speedgrip.
not according to Schwable, when I emailed them they said they weren’t going to as there was no benefit in terms of rolling resistance. But for me i would forgo a little grip for a little more longevity.
Are you sure you have seen the new tread pattern Dampf or the old one with just a blue band.
£32.99 with the £5 off code you always get at tredz
cheers but not exo+
The new HD doesn't come in SuperG and speedgrip, AFAIK, so I'd have to go soft, which isn't a big deal.
I'm gonna go DHR2 in exo+ I think, if I can stomach the price.
Only ever use a minion ss on the rear
Re the exo casings.. Never torn any but I have had a few that tend tao go all wierd after a while or a few hard days out in the parks etc..seems like the carcass either stretches or gets pulled out of shape and start wobbling.. Not just me either.. Few mates have ahd the same thing happen to them
Minion SS is just a Rock Razor though...innit?
IF you can get hold of one a Michelin Wild Enduro rear. Tough as old boots sidewalls and very good edge grip. Excellent grip on wet granite and loam.
Pondering whether to get a DHR2 2.3 to replace my nearly new 2.4 - the 2.4 is a lot knobblier, grippier and slower than the 0.1” difference would have you believe. Rather overkill on my hardtail!
Bontrager XR2 Team Issue on both HT and FS. Bump up to XR3 for winter.
Michelin wild Enduro 2.4 on Hope 35w. I like.
DHF Exo Maxterra not WT on the rear. After a DD HRII it rolls so much faster but still grips well.
I'm not convinced with the WT tyres - they're quite a bit heavier than the standard ones and I think are overkill for the rear.

Switching from 29er 2.25 Ikon front and rear to my 27.5 DHF 2.5 (front) / 2.4 HRII (rear) is like night and day!
Felt like I was glued to the trail with the second tyre setup on the other bike in this weather!
Since being schooled on my tyre pressure (or lack of), I've been getting along with the Maxxis EXO casings recently. Went through a few tyres recently (including a brand new DD Agressor!).
Turns out my "squeeze the tyre " method of setting my pressures wasn't the best! I was running way too low pressures for the rocks in the Lakes and suffering the consequences!
The 2.4 HRII (Exo) is performing for me so far
Quite a lot of it depends on your local topography - the Kentish chalky mud that I ride on is littered with broken flint so there’s an incentive to go with a sturdy carcass.
My greatest mistake was to equip my old Camber with S-Works tyres set up tubeless. They lasted approx 5 miles before both front and rear had the sidewalks slashed by a tiny piece of flint.

Hah, I had swurks fast traks, for literally one ride- hated them but on the plus side they were so thin that they made a weird noise like you were riding across a drum.

Yay, one other person on a Griffin 🙂
What's your thoughts on the DD poah? 1st ride out on mine tonight.
I may be being brave but I've got the EXO 3C one on the front too, could be interesting..
Maxxis DHF 2.5WT Maxx Terra Exo on the front (£35 From Tredz after adding £5 discount code)
Maxxis DHR2 2.4WT Maxx Terra Double Down on the rear (£55 From Tredz after adding £5 discount code)
Both on 30mm internal width rims and ran tubeless at 30psi
Experimented with various versions of the DHF and DHR2 over the years running both types on the front and rear and have found the above combinations the best for the places and conditions i ride in (Southdowns/QECP/Surrey Hills/Bike Park Wales/Rogate DH etc... all year round)
Did try a couple of versions of Schwalbe's Magic Mary's but found them not to be as good as the Maxxis
on-one smorg, they are spot on for a tightfisted get like me
I was just ready to click on a DHR Exo+ but then I bought a Michelin Wild Enduro instead. Hey ho.
On a... a Super Gravity Rock Razor here with a Minion DHF up front. I'm not sure what else I'd run. I used to like Ardents and I run a Rekon 2.8 on the Transmitter, but I rarely ride anywhere that something with a toothier tread makes sense.
What’s your thoughts on the DD poah? 1st ride out on mine tonight.
only had one ride on it so far so can't make any conslusions. Was in the dry and didn't have any drag on tarmac or climbs that I noticed. Bit narrow and I couldn't fit my huck norris in it.
Until drier weather arrives ... Spesh Eliminator Blck Dmnd. A very good tyre in the slime.
