[Closed] Something rolling about in my wheel

When my wheel turns it sounds like I’ve got rocks or something rolling about inside. I’ve removed the tyre thinking it was hardened sealant but it seems like it’s in the rim itself. All the spoke nipples are in place and I’ve no lose spokes.

Anyone had this before? Will I die if I carry on riding it?

Thanks

The wheels aren't Mavic are they? They seem to have had issues for years with some piece of non-structural metal used during manufacture of rims coming lose and rattling around at low speed.

It's maybe the bit of metal that's in the rim at the join come loose.

They’re not mavic no. Not sure what they are. They’re the stock wheels on my Giant Trance 2.

Still okay to ride do you think?

The obvious answer is the inside part of a spoke nipple but if you’ve checked that , then no idea.
Tyre lever from the last time you fitted new rubber ? Lol

I had this on a set of wheels before, it was inside the rim at the joint where the rim is joined but couldn't work out if it was swarf or something else. I couldn't get the rim to flex (if it's built properly that helps to hold it rigid too) so i squirted some expanding foam in to stop it rattling.

A bit of alloy from machining around the holes or a broken eyelet or a lost spoke nipple during the wheel build, probably need to remove tape to get it out if it won't come out of the valve hole, I once had several little bits of alloy in a kona chainstay, took me ages to fish out of the little hole.

Heh, this is coincidental. I've been meaning to try and fish something out of my road bike wheel for a couple of weeks. Doesn't make the noise when I'm riding though so it's low down my priority list. Mavic Open Pro rim too. 👍

Get this a lot. Dirty water getting in through the spoke nipple holes then the water dries and leaves sandy agglomerates behind, which then rattle till I summon the energy to take the valve out and fish them out.

Yes all the nipples seem in place and they allow me to tighten the spokes. I've not taken the rim tape off to check the bottom of the nipples.

I've only noticed it since I smashed my rear mech but I didn't break any spokes in the process and they all seem tight.

had exactally th same after an ogden ride last week. Took the valve out and an hour of shaking and all the sand has come out.

Quite surprised as i expected a nipple or something.
