Hey
As many people know, there is very little snow in the French Alps this year so we have been out on the bikes regularly (2-3 times per week) since January! We live in a ski resort and have the benefits of using some of the lifts, so while many holiday makers are out dodging rocks and riding slush, we thought we would get the bikes out. Thought that people would be interested to see our 'winter riding' conditions!!

Maybe cancel the ski trip this easter and bring the bikes out instead.
The Mountain Bike Chalet
is this an 'advertorial pictorial'?
Shame not to show how good the riding is round here.
Booked up for July!
see you then Mansell
Nice pics, but its now prime ski touring season! I shall be high in the Vanoise next week staying at Refuges.

Yer lucky b@stard! Lack of funds caused by the current economic climate means that, this year, I'm not subjecting the ski trails around Oslo to my shakey version of cross-country skiing 😉
I'll be terrorising the trails of nearby La Foy in September with The Dartmoor Posse Alpine excursion to The White Room* though 🙂
*(other chalets are available)
Anyone that is in the area, just give us a shout if you wanna hook up for a ski or even a bike if you do bring one out??
which routes are you doing and which refuges will you be staying in? we skied in and hiked out of the Mt Pourri one last week. Such an amazing view when you wake up in the morning.
Looks rubbish!
Hmmm may have to book for the summer again.
mansell
will need to see how the weather pans out. Still thinking of a night in Grand Plan refuge behind 1650 to hit some of the couloirs out there (short but sweet lines) followed by something heading over to Roc de la Peche/Pralognan (Creux de la Motte, Breche portetta etc), possibly a double loop on the Cheval Noir - up from Valmorel lifts via SW face, possibly descend S face & continue to Deux Nants refuge, back up & descend NE couloir (conditions permitting then back up & over to finish in Valmorel again...
Will need to see what happens with conditions - a friend of mine set off what turned into quite a big slab the other day - top layer started 7 then pulled out a lower layer - 50/60cm deep blocks/fracture in places !! So a bit of care will be needed...
Great pics!
I'm not jealous, not a bit. 😐
Hmmm, I'm going to Chamonix for a long weekend on Friday. Might take the bike.
Roasting hot in Chamonix yesterday - not done any ski touring in that kind of heat before 🙂
I'm quite liking the ski / bike / ski / bike mix this season!
Yeah, we've ended up taking some bookings for 50/50 biking/skiing for the last week of the season. Looking forward to it now!
slugwash - see you in September!
We were in Chamonix today and it was scorching. So many people walking around with ski boots on looking very lost!
In Kaprun last week though and there was some great powder there but back in Les Arcs ski season is totally over...but perfect for the bikes!
Jealous
Still a good foot of snow on the really low valley trails in whistler, but cant complain too much had lots more fresh snow this week (42cm) and it was even cold enough to be nice till the sun hit it!
Front wheel in Pic 3, looks, well kinda weird which I'm sure is the angle / lens but I had to double take.
So much so, I wasn't looking at the scenery, sunshine and excellent single track in all the other pictures.......
Skiing next week in Cervinia, and there is snow, lots of it, and more forecast 😀
Anyone that is in the area, just give us a shout if you wanna hook up for a ski or even a bike if you do bring one out??
Hi Mansell, I've recently moved to Fribourg and am keen to see as many different riding spots this summer as I can. How far a drive is Les Arcs from Fribourg? What is the nearest town that I could enter into google maps? According to Google, Les Arcs is near Nice 😯
You want to get yourself to the Valais area - Montreux, Bex, Dorenaz, Verbier - a fair bit closer than Les Arcs..
This is Rochers de Naye - train up from Montreux, 1000m descent back down. 40 min drive from you.

Hi guy,
Yeah I was going to head to Bex this weekend but it didn't happen. I'm waiting for the snow to melt in Rochers de Naye and I'll be heading there for sure.
Are you based in Morzine? I'll be heading over there at some point, probably for the passportes weekend. Last time I was there was 6 years ago!
Cheers,
Tim
Lifts
No mud
T-shirts
Nice singletrack
In winter
[grump]
enter bourg saint maurice into google maps.
We have that option every Winter from December until mid-April (snow is superb this year), 2 days biking, 2 days skiing in the Sierra Nevada then finish off with 2 more days biking 😛

Nice vid. Must book my trips!
Snow'll be gone from Rochers de Naye in a month, maybe? What you think?
Webcam showing snow cover there today
Yeah that will be fine.
That snow will be gone in less than a month at this rate. I reckon it was 23deg yesterday, the snow is melting really fast. Bring on the dusty trails!
Good, I'm going to see about an impromptu trip...
phototim - I'm down the road from Morzine - St Jean d'Aulps.
I know people have been riding Bex and Dorenaz already - probably able to most of the winter. We've been riding in Saleve (above Geneva), Samoens, and locally. Although todays ride was a bit ambitious:

1440m & north facing.
Rochers de Naye - looks like it'll be ready to ride from the top in May, yep - might be a bit of snow to clamber over right at the top.
But you don't have to ride all the way from the top - looks like if you get off a stop or two before then you'll have a mere 700m or so of descent.. not too shabby.
And tomorrow it's off to La Grave for two days skiing 🙂
Disappointing vid. No high 5's, moto whips or massive huckz at all.
Nice pictures Mansell. They look suspiciously like Paul's handy work?
If anyone is out there skiing or cycling Gravitate photography offer an awesome service. They took some top pictures of us skiing this winter.
Disappointing vid. No high 5's, moto whips or massive huckz at all.
That's the trouble with affordable video cameras - means average joe's like me can make videos without all that high 5, whips, huck nonsense!
sorry
Mr Smith was correct
same here in innsbruck, i rode nordkette dh yesterday!!! the snow is gone! we had a 2 month winter season if that.. only snow now is at stubai and thats even slush after 10am...
was 24 deg yesterday and 23 today. great weather!!!!
we was bathing by the lakes 😉
Guy - we actually drove right past your place last week. My other half was doing an exam over there and we were over to check out the area. Didn't see anyone around or would have said hello.
We're high enough here to still have top-to-bottom skiing, but all the singletrack heading down from the resort is rideable. Actually got a day's snowshoe guiding tomorrow! 😯
Nick-christy - does that mean I should be concerned about the course I'm doing in Hintertux (on the glacier) in May?
Gotta agree Les Arcs trails (indeed the whole Tarentaise) are running sweet as right now. Was a brilliant trail-scouting weekend for us, very odd temperatures for the time of year. Snow-free and nearly 20C at 1800m this morning.
Video of new trails to follow...........
not a bad week for powder last week...just gotta know where to look 😛

So the snow has more or less officially gone now. If there is any left in little pockets it is generally highly unstable and very unsafe and if you you find any snow on the piste then you will prob scrape your skis up as there are so many rocks poking through...however, that just means more time on the bikes with the lifts open!!
To anyone over there - Is it possible to ride from the back of the Bellecote down to Peisey Nancroix, I know it's skiable but I wondered if there is a route that can be done on a bike?
Do you know when lifts close? Possibility of a cheeky trip for a couple of days over Easter, maybe?
I'm surprised they're keeping them running (even for bikes). In other places they're shutting early.

Yes 🙂
I'm surprised they're keeping them running (even for bikes). In other places they're shutting early.
I'm not surprised. 1000's of people have paid lots of money for late-season flights and accommodation. They should do what they can to give these people *something* to ski, even if it means pushing snow a long way down the mountain.
I bet that is mental I shall have to have a go. Can't wait for July!
They will be starting to close down a large amount of the lifts from this weekend onwards and those that stay open will be used for downloading from higher up where there is snow. At the moment the skiing is fairly horrendous and involves walking through patches of mud and rocks. The resort should be staying open until advertised (30th April) however there will be very limited snow cover and lift access by then.
However...they are keeping the funi open until that date and are happy for bikes to go on. Last few weekends there have been up to 50 dh bikers there. The lobster pots in Peisey are also open to bikes so it is possible to ride a large proportion of the mountain, as long as you don't mind a bit of a pedal in places. We went across the Vanoise express with our bikes the other day with no issues at all! They are encouraging VTTs in many areas around here and even doing bike rentals from the ski shops as they realise the ski season is done!
