Buy the Stooge ….

so I can buy someone’s Jones Plus SWB 🙂

I have the older Jones 29” (steel diamond frame with truss fork) and it’s brilliant.

Stick a Ti Truss on the front James for the ultimate Jones (IMHO)

They are nice aren’t they. I had a full ti spaceframe but the fork cracked not long ago, after the frame cracked and was replaced under warranty. It’d done a lot of miles over 10 yrs so no complaints. TBH I like the steel frame and fork just as much. It’s different but not in an inferior way. Has lasted longer too.

i have a Stooge rambler but it's not for sale. Have you joined the facebook group? Frames and bikes come up on there

The Rambler, despite being heavy, having the wrong wheel size and arguably the wrong shape bars has been brilliant

Had a Jones plus.   Sadly 1 size does not fit all...so don't believe the hype.

But if I could afford a custom 22'' Jones plus I would because they ride superbly.

Had a steel Jones space frame with truss fork and tbh wasn't blown away. One size fits all and the general geometry just wasn't for me, especially the mega slack seat tube angle.

I’ve got a Stooge MK3. It’s nothing like a Jones. But both are brilliant bikes.

I had a fist generation spaceframe (one of the original Merlin built ones) loved it until I cracked it and wasn’t really offered a good fix/replacement solution. Got over it this summer and bought it a large ti LWB diamond frame and absolutely love it. It’s a brilliant bike, may not be the fastest but it’s definitely the most funingist.

Ive got a jones space frame in steel, also had a ti diamond, merlin steel with unicrown and a couple of other versions, also got 4 stooges at the moment and have owned or ridden all of the models since Andy rocked up at our ssuk in 14 and gave us one of his first 5 ss frames.

What do you want to know?

I have a MK5 stooge. I absolutely love it. It’s heavy but once I fitted a quality rear wheel I’ve never noticed it. Brilliant at singletrack. Just makes me smile when I use it, which is a mix of longer rides, bridleways, old school mountain biking (ATB), bikepacking and general exploring. It’s no slouch though, rips along well. It’s a bit like a retrobike but with modern standards and angles (not long reach though which keeps the handling snappy)

I've got a Stooge Speedball. It's quite different to the Mk's, Speedbomb, Scrambler etc probably a bit closer to the Rambler. But it is a very comfy, capable mile muncher. My bikepacking bike.

I've just made a half-arsed attempt to sell it on the Stooge FB page, but notifying too hard as I keep thinking a might ride it more.

Yeah, the speedball was designed to be the love child of a couple of my old bikes and to be an endurance machine for long distance events, 24hr races and so on. To be fair its still a fab tool for that job. Was perfect with the taz-bah ti bullmoose that were designed for me.

Cheers guys.

I guess I'm looking for a simple & affordable MTB I can grab and ride whatever the weather and not have to worry too much about maintenance / cleaning etc.

I might go SS to start (as I ride a SS CX bike a lot)

also, hoping it might be a way into some new kind of riding and some bike packing.

I love the look of the jones bikes with truss forks but they seem rare and expensive.

the Stooge's, particularly the models with the offset forks look nice and seem slightly easier to come by.

what kind of money do used Jones (steel) usually sell for?

(yes I have joined the Facebook pages) ..thanks.

what's a half decent wheelset that will accommodate 3" rubber?

cheers

You can still be looking well over 1k for a original jones 29er spaceframe thats 13 years old now.

I wouldnt go near a second hand ti jones as they can be a bit" cracky' and second  hand you have no warranty

Stooges also hold thier value, but it helps that they are better value to start with

I’d be wary of any brand Ti bike s/h.

The steel Jones bikes are tough though, and the diamond frames not heavy at all for what it is. Seen QR diamond frames with uni or truss forks for £500-£700, good frame for the money imo.

Yep, saw it for sale in the FB group and treated myself for my 50th 😁

Tweaked a few bits - gearing, seatpost/saddle - but it's mostly as was. I did experiment with some SC32 forks, but it's back to rigid now.

What gearing do you run and where do you ride?

I think both are 32 x 20.

I ride around East Devon, Dartmoor, the Quantocks, and occasionally the Cotswolds.

Had both, have it admit the Stooge was a Mk1 and only heard good things since parting ways with it, but it's a Jones every time for me

Always seen the truss fork as a highlight, the best rigid fork you will every use (IMHO) used both Ti and Steel and beyond the slight weight difference they two metals ride exactly the same

Space, Diamond and Original Plus owner, since 2013 🙂

Stooge Mk just look right. No idea what id use it for against my hardtail or full suss but I feel like it could be justifiable 😂

I have a Stooge Mk4. When I'm not near it I think about selling it as I'd like something less MTB and more gravelly to go alongside my FS bike but then I ride it and realise that's a stupid idea.

Yeah it's heavy but there's just something about it. I've had it a good 5 years now and clocked a few thousand miles on it. It's had it's seat tube repaired that's covered in primer so it's not the best looker but it's got character and it's mine.
