So, I fancy a bit of a challenge... I already swim 5km, cycle 100 road miles (plus) and run 20 miles in each week.. So I kinda figure I can string the lot of activites together on one day somehow and complete a Half-Ironman - and feel all chuffed and self-satisfied, like.. (I have never done so much as a couple of short duathlons back in the 90s when I was a teen, mind. Hmmm..)
As I'm based in Aus at the moment, I have a choice of Brisbane (October), Port Macquarie (November), Shepparton (November) and Canberra (December).
I reckon if I can find a flat-ish course and perhaps someone to ply me with energy drinks and flat Coke along the way, I might actually make it! ๐
Any advice...?
I was thinking about doing one at some point until I saw (1) the entry cost and (2) the start time
I've done a couple of 12 hour races; this doesn't seem much harder. Esp. if you aim to just complete the course rather than acutally 'race'.
Any comments?
TBH.. I think a Half-Ironman prbably is a bit easier than a 12 hr race! I wouldn't fancy doing one of those 12 hour things, not for no amount of money/fame/glory!
You're right about the cost and the start time though!! JEEEZUS! 6:30am start and a 100 quid entry fee.... add to that the cost of getting there and back (another 100 quid), accommodation (50 ish?), one of those triathlon wetsuit thingies (50 quid on flea-bay) and all of a sudden I'm looking at the best part or 300 quid just to do one race. Hmmmmm...
I'm sure I could build up a rough-and-ready rigid secondhand 69er for that money (amongst other dreaming things).
Yeah, fair point..
half ironman? Half arsed! do the whole thing you lazy bastard! ๐
Naaaaa.... I reckon you've gota be a proper mentalist to want do the full-fat version! ๐
Doing the Vitruvian in September in glamorous Rutland Water. Done some 24hr racing including solo and 12hr time trials on the road as well as Olympic distance tris, sprints, the odd marathon and nonsense like that. Happy to let you know how it compares - on the bright side it's finally making me learn to swim properly, on the down side it's a lot of training and the cost is silly.
But as I'm knocking on 40 it's cheaper than the usual mid life crisis cliches. Unless I buy a new TT bike with Zip wheels.....
I'd be tempted to try the diciplines individually at first i.e some 1/2 marathons and 25/50 mile TTs and some open water swims before joining them all up.
IMO halfs are easier than 12 hour solos.
