100% my own fault before you lot start! 😉

Washed the bike with the my DX light still on, which seemed to disagree with the connectors. They went rusty. This made for a very touchy connection at best, so I tried to clean the female contact out by chipping off the rust with a small screwdriver. OOPS! A tiny spark and it's not working at all. Hmmmm. Must be an internal fuse in the battery pack, because even I know cells don't blow that easily (Used to race electric RC cars) Open up battery pack. Ahh. There's a small circuit board in here, that's what's had it!

Cut that out, lob it into the bin, solder wires back onto cells, replace corroded connectors with, err, some auto electrical connectors.

Success! It works! It charges! (Well the light on the charger goes red) but seemingly no action from the switch on the light (Which was working last week, maybe that's corroded too?)
Never mind. If I can finish the winter on this lash-up that will be 2 years from a £50 light, so I'm happy!

But...... Will it blow up? 😀

What type of battery?

If its a Lipo/Lion type battery as in laptops, then I think the answer is yes...it probably will blow up! Check youtube for some fiery battery action...

If it catches on fire, do you have a way to get it off the bike quickly ❓

Or are you planning on simply abandoning it and saving yourself ❓

Also is there any chance of an explosion and shrapnel ❓

If so and you survive, please try to get some video footage, that I would like to see 😀

Jump to 1m30s. He removed the circuit protection, just like you. I suggest you charge them outside...

I don't think they're li-po cells. Not on a £50 light. It's just 4 of those 18547 (well something like that!) cells in a pack. Lithium ion at best I think.

18650 cells

http://www.dealextreme.com/p/ha-iii-cree-ssc-p7-c-sxo-3-mode-900-lumen-led-headlamp-set-4-18650-included-29489

Commercially available ones are Lithium Ion.

I used to just charge 2200mah sub-c cells until they were nice and warm....And when you rip 2200mah out of them in a 5 minute race, you can't touch the buggers! 🙂

Well, the battery has charged OK and the charger has cut off. After a bit of fiddling, the power switch on the light is working too.......

That looks like a LiPo cell in that video.
