Has anyone experienced a snapped inner chainlink. I have on a brand new shimano 11speed mtb chain with 60 miles maximum on it. I've snapped plenty chains but normally it isn't really a snap- instead the pin separates from the outer link and pulls apart. This time the pair of inner links split completely in two at the narrowest point.
I reckon it must be a warranty job?
Thoughts anyone?

Was it too short for the gear range
Was it twisted while the rear wheel was

Was it on an E-bike (they break a lot of chains)

Don't know why I asked for opinion on whether it is a warranty job or not - I've submitted my claim anyway so awaiting the seller's judgement.

By thinnest point, do you mean mid way between two pins, or at the bit of the plate that the pin passes through? Were either of the adjacent pins the joining pin (if you used one)?

I have somehow managed to snap a chain link on a kmc chain. It snapped around the pin but this was on an abused singlespeed work bike.
Shimano had a batch of 11s ultegra level chains with a similar issue. Poor heat treatment IIRC. Pretty sure these should all be well out of circulation by now. It was ~2 years ago.
Was it on a 26" bike? 😀
I saw a guy on the mendips a couple of months ago snap a chain like that but I think it was across the pin holes which should be the weakest part tensile wise. We were out walking and he came up the hill just after a stream crossing and seemed to have a dodgy shift and then *BANG*. I knew it was more than your usual splayed link/rivet failure from the bang and sure enough it was the actual link that snapped. No idea on the chain though, looked to be a 1x11 set up.
Bit worried now as I picked up some of the old stock 11 speed chains from wiggle...OEM packaging but I think they were ultegra/XT spec.

If I'm understanding this correctly both of the side plates have broken, I've never seen that kind of failure. I've seen loads where a clumsy shift under load has sprung the plate off a pin, and those are definitely in your mistreatment category.
