My Steerer tube lengths are always around 190-200 mm on Medium frames.

What would be the shortest length steerer that would be of any use ( on small frames etc )

I ask because I have made a score in the steerer tube and it will have to be cut down to around 170 mm to be safe. Just wondering if this length would be of any use on another smaller frame. ie for selling it to re coupe some of the cash for the new forks.

Bit of a "How long is a piece of string question really...

How long is the head tube?
Is there any headset stack to account for?
What sort of stem are you using?

Irrelevant, read the post...

what sort of fork? A lot of XC 29" hardtails have short head tubes, if it's a 160mm fork you may struggle a bit more.

Edit: 103mm headtube even on a 19" Trek Superfly FWIW.

Both mine are about 190mm. Could probably get away with 180mm. I wouldn't cut below the score just to sell them. If the score is at 170mm and someone needed 180mm then the score would be in a pretty low stress place under the stem.

170mm is not too short to be useless (I have some Lyriks with a 170mm steerer and I'm pretty sure my 29er forks are sub 170mm) but its just a case that as the steerer gets shorter, the number of potential buyers drops so don't expect to get top dollar for them

Thanks all some hope at least.

I thought they were pretty much scrap. Might make the difference between Revs and Pikes.

I wouldn't cut it.

mention it in the sale, leave it up to potential buyers to decide whether it needs to be cut. How deep is the score? Are we talking a faint line or a substantial cut?

Strange, I was wondering the same thing the other day, as I've got a set of Rebas that until recently were gracing the front of my old Kona Kula. It is a 17" frame with a normal (i.e. not zero stack) headset. I was running an easton stem and 8mm of spacers, yet when I removed the forks, the steerer measures up at 155mm and is too bloody short for seemingly any other frame in the world.

Are head tubes getting longer, or is my Kona just poorly endowed?! Anyway, back on topic - at 170mm you'll find a buyer for them, but not as easily as if they were 190mm. Reduce it to 155mm and they're probably worthless ๐Ÿ™

i cut some Pike 29ers down to 162mm - medium Tallboy with a 100mm head tube, external bottom cup,

didn't have any issues selling them with a steerer that short,

Old 16 and 14 inch steel Konas have tiny headtubes, as do some more modern frames with 44mm headtubes and inset cups, but it really is a 'how long is a piece of string' style question until you know what frame someone might try and fit them to.

170mm isn't that short though

Thanks Ned

Mine look more like they have been hack sawed, more than half way through the metal.

with the number of internal/integrated headtubes around nowadays I'd have thought anything down to around 150 would be useful for someone.
