[Closed] Skipping gears - poorly adjusted or worn out?

Gears really started to annoy me at Cannock the other day - if I ride in my "usual" gear of 32-16 they're fine, but if I want to shift a few easier on the cassette they start skipping like mad. On climbs I have to use the easiest gear (granny front - 32t rear or something like that) which is often a bit too easy/slow, because using anything slightly lower down on the cassette will just skip and bring me to a stop.

Probably hard to diagnose without seeing it but could my cassette just be too worn to work well or does it need adjusting properly?

Should I just go singlespeed and forget my seemingly endless gearing hassles?

Have a look at the cassette and compare the sprockets that work to the one the it skips in. I suspect the skippy ones will be quite worn.

might just be your cable adjuster is wound out or broken (the one on the mech) slippage is more noticeable on higher gears where the cable is under more tension. wind the adjuster all the way in, then out one turn and reset your gears

Check the cassette lockring isn't loose.

it need adjusting properly?

Gears generally dont work well unless they are adjusted properly. I'd adjust it so its proper and try again.

New cable might be a good idea too

I've got the cable barrel adjuster (at the derailleur) wound out quite far as otherwise the chain just skips on my "main" gear of 32-16. tbh I'm useless with gears and have no idea what to do with it. I'd rather not take it to a shop though as I don't really have the money!

Elimination game, check rear hanger is aligned and also the freehub body is not faulty.

Def check hanger.

You are unlikely to see wear in cog teeth.

Have you had the rear cassette remooved recently?

If you have, check that the last few sprockets are on the right way round (The grooved sides should be facing outwards and smooth side to the Hub.)......"Visions of lots of riders checking the rear cassette" ๐Ÿ˜‰

It could be also cable adjustment or the rear mech hangers bent hth

haha epicyclo I always think that when something goes wrong with my gears (which it always seems to). I'm just not sure whether to commit to SS on my only mountain bike.

If it turns out I'd have to spend a load on new gearing stuff I probably would just go SS though just because all I'd need is a cassette conversion kit and a new chain!

Will have a go at re-adjusting soon, it'll probably end in tears.

Have you changed your chain recently?

Cassettes & chains wear together, so if you change one & not the other, you can get chain slip as a result.

If your chain slips on some sprockets & not others, that's a good sign of wear IMHO.

Yeah the chain was changed a month or so ago (after it snapped 3 times in one ride), but it was slipping before that as well AFAIK.
