[Closed] Singular Rooster - the Dually offer

Any body on the Rooster waitlist taking up the Dually wheel offer?
Know nothing about regular prices for this sort of wheel sets, but I assume that the deal is a good one?
And like wine lists, is it most sensible to pick neither the cheapest nor the most expensive on offer?

Not on the list, but what's the price range? The Dually rims are about £100 each, so depends on hubs and spokes.
I've been thinking about building a spare pair of wheels for my Krampus using some Kris Holm 29" unicycle rims, which are 48mm wide and £56 each - only come in 36h though.

I was thinking of going for the rims and building them up myself. My reasoning is down more to cash flow at the moment and not knowing anything about the hubs. Even going for XT spec hubs (about £55) by the time I've bought spokes the total price isn't going to be far off the cheapest wheelset price.

The Rabbit Holes and Duallys are very expensive, especially when you consider the unicycle ones are half the price!

Wheelsets are the standard/comp/pro here.

Price on the comp is about 30% under the US msrp, before vat is applied.

So about £500?
Seems quite a lot, considering you could source the rims and a set of Hope Evo 2s for £400, and then get them built up for less than a ton. Or look at something like the Kris Holm ones and some XT hubs for under £200.

But can the Kris Holm rims be run tubeless easily? They do look good for the price though.

I'm going to have the Duallys off Sam but build them up with some s/h Hope hubs - I should be able to do it for @£280 or so which will save a bit of money and I know what hubs I'm getting

I guess if the Rabbit Holes can be (with their cut-outs), the KH ones should be doable.
I haven't gone tubeless on the Krampus, but only had 2 punctures in a year and a half - one a massive thorn, and the other a proper tube shredder of a snakebite.

I run KH rims tubeless, with the inner skin cut out,to save weight.don't attempt this unless you are not scared of dying horribly tho,or just an idiot singlespeeder who knows no better.

I bought a secondhand pair of Hope XC hubs for a set of Rooster wheels. Hubs probably need new bearing service.

The Velocity hubs are described as Taiwan cartridge bearing hubs.

If I go with just Dually rims from Sam, how much would spokes and build cost and who would you use for the build?

May just buy the basic wheelset to save hassle, it is a very good offer and way below US pricing and Surly wheelset.

In the future I want to try IGH, either Alfine if the 2015 updates work better, or Rohloff if I could try one, so a set of extra rims also makes sense.

Can you tell I am confused?

I base my wheelbuild pricing on what evans charge which is £30. That includes spokes and rim tape. If you look at the wheel builder tool on just riding alongside website it gives a good breakdown on costs of nice hubs and spokes.

I'll be popping for a pair of rims, I'm not sure the wheelsets seem that great a value to me since I do have a pair of Hope Hubs that can be stripped from an old pair.

Travers are doing a deal - Hope hub + northpaw rim £199 (reduced from £259).

The prices given to backers of the Rooster project include UK/EU VAT, so I think they represent pretty good value. I have not used the hubs myself but I have heard positive things about both them and the wheel build quality. The spokes are quality across the line and the rims are the best 29+ option out there at present IMO. If it were me I would go for the Comp option as the 15mm adaptable front hub and the butted spokes seem worth it. The only difference with the Pro is CX-Ray spokes which I wouldn't recommend for use with these rims in any case.

Not that it helps in any way but I've just built up a Dually which I bought from CTBM (£104 for a rim) on an XT hub for my 29+ fronted Inbred. Lovely rims, thumbs up from me 🙂

I'm sure thats the second time I've heard 15mm hubs mentioned in a Rooster thread. Am I mistaken or is the fork a regular QR?

It would give the hubs compatibility with suspension forks. A bit of future proofing?

Yes, exactly - just to ensure suspension fork compatibility.

Hmmm never really considered it with a sus fork. What takes a 29+ at the moment?

Some Fox 29er forks do with a few mm clearance, and upside down designs like the Maverick Duc32 and SC32....

Excuse to show this pic again....
