Have a single speed MTB and using a chain checker the chain is pretty worn. Would normally change it on a geared bike but I wonder if its necessary on a single speed? Will it wear and fail at some point or is it just a case it will just wear out the chainrings and cogs quicker.

Change and keep ring/cog or just run it into the ground, as long as you have enough adjustment. It should keep going for a long time...
