I'm currently running a DMR switchback as a singlespeed. I'm using a Gusset mech hanger type tensioner:

Which is OK, but is a faff to get the wheel in and out, and doesn't look the prettiest!

I've been toying with getting one of these types:

To mount on the ISCG tabs. This will look neater (perhaps!) and bring the weight more central, and should make whipping the wheel in and out easier.

What's the general consensus on these two types of SS tensioner???

Ta!

EDIT - plus, when I get round to removing the old canti/cable mounts, I can chop the mech hanger too!

Not tried the front mount, but I reckon it would look neater.

YESS make one with spring tension I think, like a rear one, but mounted on the front, so can cope with chain stretch.

I've seen someone on here using the stinger type and it looks way better. I'm going to try it whenever I end up singlespeeding my HT again. The mech-style ones aren't ideal as I have to take my wheel off to get the bike in the car and it's a hassle.

The stinger there isn't strictly a tensioner, more a chain guide.
However you can indeed use it in this way. I did this on my dmr sidekick single speed.
Thing is, it makes getting the wheel off harder if anything as you have to poke an Allen key through the chainwheel and undo 3 iscg bolts to release the tension.

It's a good and much neater solution if you don't need to take the wheel out much.

Half link chain and get rid of the need for a tensioner all together?

footflaps what chain is that / where do I get a half link chain? I'd like to do that on my Genesis altitude as the Gusset type tensioner is fouling on the cowled dropouts, not allowing enough tension I don't think.

Same principle but I've not got ISCG tabs so I used a BB mounted DMR thingy which works quite nicely, had a Gusset rear mounted tensioned before which was gash IMO.

I did need to use a half link to get to a sensible chain length for tensioning, and I do find the chain looses a bit of tension over say 100 miles or so and the device just needs nipping up a little, its an easy 2 minute job...

An ISCG mount may well make an even neater solution...

I Don't take the rear wheel out very often but when I do it's not too tricky.

Just ordered the stinger - reduced on CRC!!
It's a pretty old frame I've got, so I'm sure it's the standard ISCG, not the new 05 type.... (I hope!)

I've run both and much prefer the ISCG mounted way (neater looking and easier to remove the rear wheel). Seems quieter aswell but thats probably just me.

Can't the wheel just be pulled upwards with vertical dropouts?

Well, all fitted and it's a much neater solution TBH.

Even with a good chain tension, there's no issues in dropping the rear wheel out - no need to move the stinger at all.

Also, looks better, which is the main thing in life......

I went for a stinger, less faffage in the long run and looks way neater.

Any more pics, I'm thinking of selling my 17.5 simple for a 16 simple, but perhaps an alternative would be a 16 soul or bfe with a stinger.

I use a stinger too, just a straight bb mount one. I keep the tension on the chain by use of a cable tie pulling the stinger up to the chainstay ๐Ÿ™‚
