The mighty Dune, here in XC race format- which means, jumbo jims instead of minions. But it's done a couple of enduros and this weekend it's doing a mountain time trial, whatever one of those is.

Weight- depends on tyres, 30lbs ish with a Reverb in it. Though in this pic, it had a saddlebag with a spare tube in that probably added half a kilo ๐Ÿ˜†

I have one of these - it climbs better (needs less skill) than my Tallboy LT and weighs 23.6 lbs.
It does not descend quite as well.

Budget lightweight race bike -
[img] [/img]

Most of the build list here.
12.7kg there, will lose a kg+ with new wheels Im getting built just now.
You dont need a lot of money to make a lightweight bike, just patience to find the right parts.

Only raced on the road so far, for a laugh -

Haha I know, I was too lazy to take it off ๐Ÿ™‚

A fat bike is actually perfect for that course, as the surface is pretty nasty in some places and generally very bumpy for the rest ๐Ÿ™‚

Lightman, you are a genius. Or that other thing that's the exact opposite of a genius.

With the dropper post and a set of nates it's 27lbs / 12.2kg (when I remove the bag, bottle etc.).
The wheels saved a load of weight - a kilo per wheel.

Although when you and the bike are covered in mud I'm not sure what difference it makes!
Not weighed it with jumbo Jims as it not summer but with a regular post &Jims it should be 25.5lbs (ish).

Fast...not with me on board, unless a very steep hill is involved.
Light...compared to a bulldozer, yes, but at 32lbs...not really.
Fun...jury's still out.

I've done a TT on a full susser, one without any lockouts or fancy damping (IIRC I did a 26 for a 10 and beat a few) but I think lightman's beat's that - chapeau!

Well done Fraser. It certainly got cold on that Saturday night.

My Singular Puffin:

Carbon forks and carbon Jones Loop bars, otherwise nothing especially light. Comes in at 14.2Kg inc pedals

Stuck it on the scales tonight, 29lbs on the nose with Minion 4.8s and a 150mm dropper. That's enduro race mode ๐Ÿ˜†

Carbon frame, wheels, seatpost, bars, weight 12.2kg. Could be lighter, crankset is heavy (I may get around to swapping it out), and it's running with tubes so there's nearly another kg to lop off..

Frame, forks and rack is to my own design and bought direct from Waltly Titanium. You can find more info on Spanner Bikes

Saturday was only -20C, you should have hung around until Tuesday night!

Trouble is now I have some ideas to make an even better expedition bike when there's little wrong with this one!

Not particularly race but 13.2 kg or just over 29lbs which I think is pretty good for an XL fatbike with 4.8" tyres

Tuesday night we were grappling with Manchester airport's dire departure gate/pickup in +11C ๐Ÿ™„ (for future reference - come out of building, turn right, get in lift and go to the arrivals hall and wait while your partner goes and gets the car)

What wheels are those Dovebiker?

I think if you want a light (relative term) fat bike then the two key areas are frame and wheels/tyres: you'll probably save a kilogramme with a carbon frame rather than a steel one and probably another Kg using lighter tyres - my wife's Surly Wednesday has 3.8 Nates 27TPI which are 500g each heavier than my 45Nrth tyres.

No matter what the weight (within reason) fat bikes seem to ride a lot "lighter" than they've any right to.

I did a 1.21.40 for the 30miles finishing 36th out of 61, only about 5 mins slower than when I did it on my old TT bike a few years before!

matt_outandabout:
I usually ride with quite a high saddle, it might be the mid sole cleats that are making it look lower ๐Ÿ˜‰

No reason not to IMO.

The main reason for picking a frame should be its suitability for your purpose.

My carbon fat frame is 1,350 gms; my 907 is 1,850 gms, early Mukluk 2,200 gms, and a Pugsley is 2,600 gms.

The difference between the highest and the lowest is not much more than using tubes against tubeless.

If I was going bikepacking, I'd happily take the slight frame weight penalty of the Pugsley because it still would be possible to do a very light build if using the same WW bits as on the carbon bike.

Hi Sweepy - I never noticed there are no piccies on their site, but I did just go to the shop and drool over them....
I have not mastered putting piccies up on STW so will put a couple on my blog tonight.

I would have emailed you but can't get your details. Sorry.

I'm a fan of a steel or ti hardtail but tbh with 4 or 5 inches of tyre, any "steel feel" is pretty much lost in the rounding (and there's never any guarantee of any benefits even on a thinbike, steel can be stiff and dead too). So I'd say don't so much think about material, as just suitability- geo, features, spec.
